Well, drove a ford fusion SEL and Sport 2010 and I must say that the Sonata sounds and feels atrocious in comparison. In the Fusion the car over bump sounds solid, muted and refined without any jarring. With the Sonata, it feels the exact opposite, loose, LOUD and jarring. WTF??

You could be describing my Azera but I would also add "busy" and "bouncy" into the mix of descriptive terms.

I re-read all of the posts dealing with the suspension noise and was wondering...what is the problem exactly? Is it struts, bushings, joints or something else? Do those after market struts with dampering work? I am into this 2009 Sonata for four years and I will spend $500 in aftermarket shocks if that is what it takes. ANy words of wisdom out there?

Hi Clem...

I wish we knew "exactly" what the issue was. With the "ka-thunk" is was only a matter of replacing the shocks, but we are not sure with the 2009's because supposedly have the same shocks that fixed the previous year models. I am also not aware of anyone who has tried the aftermarket shocks as of yet.

I have been a faithful Sonata owner since 2006 and on my third one. My wife still has her 2006 Azera. However, I am pretty sure this will be my last Hyundai. I think I would rather spend a little more and get something I know is not going to have issues like this... and I can NOT count on Hyundai. My 2006 had the famous "ka-thunk" for a year before they fixed it, but they never could fix the gas slosh noise in the gas tank. My 2008 had transmission problems, of which after 4 trips and several long days of service work, they could never fix. Now my 2009 has suspension noise and I feel every single little bump I hit. These would be great cars at fantastic prices if they could only get them right.

Yup, this would be my last Hyundai as well. I would like to get rid of it now, but the price has depreciated so much that I will take a hit of over 7 grand. Ouch!!

I have to agree with the last Hyundai comment. I was considering the new Fusion and should have bought one of them. I had a 2002 Elantra and was a satisfied for 7 years. The suspension noise is really annoying and I use our other car more often now so I don't have to listen to it. I received a questionaire from Hyundai and I mentioned the suspension noise. I received a follow up call and they issued a problem number (or something like that).
Maybe some day they will figure out what is causing this noise.

My first and last Hyundai. It is bad enough that my Azera has suspension problems (among other things) but the treatment that I've received from Hyundai corporate and at the dealer level is the straw that broke the camel's back. Worst dealer service I've ever had from 3 different local Hyundai dealers and they (local and corporate) are in total denial about the suspension problems.

As far as what is causing it....I dunno if it is a poor parts problem or a design flaw. I've been hoping for a definitive answer for almost two years.

And yes, I would be way upside down if I got rid of it now because of poor resale value. Lesson learned.

They tested it and said it was because of the spare tire being loose! They tightened it and guess what..........................it is still loud and jarring! WTF??

Big surprise!

I really don't have a clue what the magic formula is for all the noise, but it is really annoying at times. I listen to my music really loud most of the time so it drowns it out. But when I have other people in the car and the tunes aren't so loud, it's a bit embarassing.

I've REEEEALLY got my eyes on the Genesis Coupe, but if there's even a remote chance that it's plagued by this issue, it's off the table for me.

I have heard the Azera's and the Genesis are plagued with the same noisy suspension, although that was on the first models... not sure about the coupe.

You can purchase the KYB rear shocks.

KYB 349060 GR-2 Shock Absorber

They are supposedly working on the fronts and will release them soon.

If the Sonata wasn't so quiet it wouldn't be an issue for most of you. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif)

Did you purchased these with confirmation that they will stop the noise in the rear?

What makes them better or what makes them fix the problem. It seems like if it were nothing more than shock absorbers that Hyundai would have already offered replacements as a fix. The shocks that come on the 09 are the same ones that replaced the bad shocks on the 06 and 07 models and fixed the infamous ka-thunk problem. Now these are causing issues... the ones that fixed a similar problem in earlier models?

No, I haven't replaced mine as of yet. Personally while the suspension is a little busier then I would like, I don't find it that bad or as bad as others make it to be. Of course we may have different issues altogether so I don't know, we haven't drove each others cars to compare. I feel it is louder then normal due to the overall quietness of the Sonata. And your right, we're not sure what the exact problem is, but in my ride I get the most noise from the rear. Which I believe to be the shocks not absorbing road bumps/holes as well or as quiet as they should. Eventually I may replace mine, if no Hyundai fix is available, but only if I decide to lower my car, which depends if I purchase rims and tires...So. Yeah.

That dude who purchase the SE shocks for his 2009 apparently disappeared so that would have been a good source of info.
Another recent dude has a full coil over setup in an older Sonata, and when I asked about the ride and all I didn't get a response, I love that....

So the proverbial jury is still out I guess, the ones who can say yeah or nay have chosen a vow of silence.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/clap.gif)

Guys,

I have an appointement with my dealer on Tuesday next morning. The service manager told me last week that a guy from Hyundai Canada was coming. I have been invited to discuss this issue directly with him because a fix in on field testing.

My questions to him:

When the fix will be availble and who is going to benefit of it

I'll post back

Charles

I got smart and took everything out of the trunk, including spare. The look on the guys face (thinking it would be an easy repair) was priceless. I got new shocks, and problem went away for me.

As promissed,

I had a meeting with my dealer and service & part superviser. Right now, 40 redesigned shocks assy (30 USA, 10 Canada) are on field testing. No dates as far when they can be released.

Be patient, stay tuned.

My wife and I are going to test drive a Fusion Hybrid today. If the Sport model, which has the sportier suspension rides better, then I suspect the Hybrid (or even any of the non Sport editions) will drive even softer. Of course we are comparing cars that if both are loaded up with everything they offer, there is over $5000 difference in price.

Regardless of the price difference, I agree that the "loose, LOUD and jarring" ride of the Sonata is absolutely uncalled for and has caused me to say that I will NEVER buy another Hyundai. I am DONE with them. I have owned a 2006 model that I had to wait a year on to finally get the infamous "ka-thunk" in its suspension fixed. I then owned an 08 model that they could and would not fix the sputtering transmission, of which I lost about $6,000 on trading in on this 09 that has the poorest suspension of any vehicle I have EVER driven. It is just silly nonsense... not to mention every Tom, Joe, Harry and Margaret have a Sonata now. Oh... can you tell I have a rather poor attitude about Hyundai? My wife says she will most likely buy another Azera to replace her 06 that she has just about paid off. She is eagerly waiting for the 2010 Azera to roll out.
