> Squeaky Brake Question - 2006 Sonata, Squeaks Initially, Then Goes Away

Hello,

Yesterday morning and this morning when I pulled out of my garage with the windows down, I heard my brakes squeaking. After driving only about 100 feet, the squeaking went away on both occasions. I drove around the block at about 20 MPH, applying the brakes several times, and still did not hear any squeaking. It seems that I only hear the squeaking initially, when the car is cold.

My 2006 Sonata has 35,000 miles on it, and I'm not sure if the brakes have ever been replaced. I bought it used several months ago.

Anyhow, if I need new brakes, shouldn't I hear the squeaking all the time, or is it common for the squeaking to go away, and then reappear when the car is cold? I only drive my car about 50 miles a week (I live within 2 miles of where I work). Not sure if this has anything to do with the intermittent squeaking.

Thanks,

Matt

i actually just got my pads replaced about 4 weeks ago and on cooler morning, i hear a "slight" squeaking when i pull out of my driveway, but then it goes away very quickly after that..

as for whether or not you need pads, only you can answer that (physically looking at the pads - or a mechanic).. a constant squeaking would indicate the pads were worn down, but a "first 100 feet of the day" squeak may not mean the pads are worn.. my pads lasted until about 46k miles (i also bought used at 26k miles)...

I've got 33k miles on my '06 GLS V6 and it's possible you're experiencing the same thing I experience when I first drive my car after it's been sitting. The rotors oxidize a bit when they sit, especially in wet weather or high humidity. I normally get some squeaks when I pull out of the garage in the mornings, and when I head home from work in the afternoons (after the car's had a chance to sit, allowing the rotors to oxidize/rust a bit).

Once the brake pads polish the surface of the rotors and remove the oxidation after the first few applications of the brake, no more squeaking.

Just a thought...

yeah, but that usually sounds more like a "grinding" sound, no? because i get that too if the rotors have any rust on them...

although, maybe it does both... could be

Nope, mine's definitely a high-pitched squeaky sound. It disappears after the initial use of the brakes (or the first substantial use of the brakes), once the rotors get cleaned up a bit. It's done it since it was new. It's not terribly loud, but loud enough that I always wonder if people are looking at me... :whistling:

guyz...i have the same observation. Squeaking sound as I pull out of the car port to go to work in the morning. Lasts only for the first few seconds and then disappears completely. Hoping that my rotors dont fall off with the rust one morning :P

Yes Most likely, I changed my car brake pads almost two weeks ago it was still about 2,000 miles left of driving on them. Change them as soon as possible.

Well, I took it into my local mechanic. He said all the pads are at 50% and that I do not need to replace them for quite a while. He also said that the squeaking is probably from the humidity and rain we've had here recently, and brake dust build-up on the rotors... Looks like I'm good to go :-)

I think it's normal for some brakes to squeak when cold. Mine do it when backing out of my parking space after work. Once they warm up a bit (from being used) it will go away. Could also be a bit of oxidization. Heavy oxidization (rotors look rusted after a rain storm) will cause grinding noises.
