Anyone have any idea where else we can get spare keys for the Azera? I just bought a used one but the previous owner only had one key. The dealer said it would be over $200 to order them from Korea. Anyone else have this problem? Did you find any spares for less?

I no longer own my 2007 Azera but when I did, I also attempted to get a spare key.

Like you, I was told they would have to come from Korea. I also found out that even if I could have found a spare key, the laser cutting process was not available
for the Hyundai key in the States.

I gave up looking but perhaps things have changed by now.

Odd. My dealer had a machine sitting in the showroom for cutting the key. Told me the cutting process was nearly $100. :wacko: That didn't include the cost of the key itself either.

It takes a special laser key cutter to cut Azera keys. The machines themselves cost about $10,000. You are very lucky if you find a dealership that owns one.

If you have a key already, you may try to call around and see if you can find any locksmiths in the area that have the laser key cutters. You can buy a key blank from the dealer and take it to the locksmith and they can copy the key you already own. However, you will then have to take the key back to the dealer to have them code it to the car or it will not start the car. Irritating, I know, but unless you want to buy an entire key set from Korea, this is the only way I know to get a key.

Speaking of Azera keys......

1. If I buy a new 2009 Azera, how many keys will I get from the dealer?

2. If I get the dealer to throw in some extra keys with the sale, how many keys can you get in total and still have all of them work on starting the car? (Hopefully I could get at least four total keys that start the car.)

3. Can I assume that they could make keys that open the doors but would not start the car above and beyond those in question 2 above?

Budh,

1. You would get 3 sets: 2 sets with Keys & Transmitters + 1 Valet key (no transmittor)

2. I don't think having 4 active keys would be a problem.

3. No, they can't make keys which can just open the doors only & not start the engines.

Also, getting spare keys isn't all that difficult. You need to get Hyundai OEM Blank Keys & Transmitters. Then, if your local Hyundai dealer doesn't have a laser cutter, take it to your local Lexus or BMW or MB dealer (they would certainly have one).

Then, take the laser cut keys & transmitters back to your Hyundai dealer. They would have to reprogram your keys to make them active.

BTW, remember not to try to start the car with your new keys until you get them reprogrammed. If you try to start the car with the unprogrammed keys, your car's computer would think that someone is trying to steal car & immobilize the engine. Then you would have to get your car towed to your dealer to get the computer lock rescinded.

Ooops - my bad. Valet key likely does everything but unlock the trunk and glove compartment.

Thanks everyone for the responses. BTW for those of you not aware of our Canadian issues I will try to enlighten for the benefit of people accessing this thread down the road. I bought a car in Michigan and imported it into Canada. It only had one key. The dealers around here don't like me because I didn't buy a car from them for $10000 more. So, when I called one of them about they key issue and he found out it was a US imort he blew me off.

I finally found a dealer in Buffalo (Northtown Hyundai I think) that has blanks and says they can cut and program the keys. Now I just have to make it down there. The blanks were about $20. To program a key is $45. I forgot how much it was to cut one.

I'm always amazed when I hear how Canadian-sold Azeras cost so much more than a US-sold Azera. Then I'm equally amazed that Canada doesn't charge you an arm and a leg in "import taxes" for having the temerity to cross the southern border, buy and bring one back!

Or is it just that the Canadian dealers have sorta "unionized" and have jointly decided (with Hyundai's acquiescence, I suppose) not to sell below a certain price-point?...

That is exactly what has happened. In fact, there is a class action lawsuit before the courts right now against all car manufacturers in CAnada. They are being sued for price fixing compared to US prices. I don't think they'll win this one and maybe things will finally change. For years they have been making bs excused about why they charge more money.

Years ago, when I lived in Italy while assigned to NATO, I imported my newly bought 1977 Honda Accord from the States without having to pay import duties, as was the law regarding NATO force elements in the day. Of course, if the car had been stolen while I was there, I would have been socked retroactively with taxes and penalties, but that didn't happen.

Anyway, I'd wondered why there were so few Japanese makes on Italian roads from any Asian manufacturer and then I learned that the Italian government, as a player in government ownership of the Fiat auto company, and in conjunction with Italy's automobile manufacturing unions, had limited that nation's import of Japanese cars to 2,500... per year!

Can't stand the competition? Ban it!...
