Our 2009 Sonata Limited 4 cylinder automatic seems to do a lot of downshifting when operated using cruise control. It seems to downshift any time the speed drops about 1 mph so small inclines trigger a downshift from 5th to 4th. We have to switch the transmission to manual mode and lock it in 5th if there are inclines, head winds, etc.
The dealer does not seem to think there is anything wrong but all other vehicles I have driven are not nearly so sensitive. Anyone else out there had similar problems or know of any solutions?

Noticed the same thing...the engine is still virgin, with less than 400 miles so I attributed this behavior to that fact, however my 2005 Accord does not behave like this. I'll be happy to hear opinion of others as well.

Merge into freeway on 4-th manual and then switch to 5-th and then set CC.

interesting, I don't think I've ever seen the cruise shift down on my '06 and that was through pretty hilly terrain too.

Maybe the tranny is still in the learning mode--adaptive shift technology? The tranny should try to stay in 5th with the torque coverter locked.

I got the same problem from day 1 and I've been canceling CC when it downshifts and resuming when I drive on the leveled road.
I've never experienced this with other cars, either.

My 2009 Sonata has little over 7400 miles now and it's still doing it.
I need to stop by my dealer tomorrow for the warranty service and will ask them about it.

Fortunately I live in Florida where there isn't much climbing besides freeways at times. I noticed it did it when I used the cruise control once, but it was a steep incline. Personally I don't find it to be an issue so whatever...

heh I would like mine to do this when I hit the accerlator button for my cruise control, instead I jus tap manual and downshift myself.. any where over 40 while using cruise I have never seen my 07 downshift by itself.

I haven't experienced any problems like this. We have taken our Sonata through the Black Hills and the Ozark Mountains and it maintains the speed when using the cruise without downshifting, that I have noticed. But, that can be attributed to the difference between the I4 and the V6. Now that you've go me wondering, maybe this weekend I will go find some roads with lots of hills around here and see what happens. Since gas around here is under 2.80 a gallon, I won't feel bad about driving aimlessly around.

i havent experienced it either, but then again, i think the original poster is referring to an '09... and an I4 at that (whereas i have an '06 V6)

and i dont exactly have a lot of hills and valleys where I am in NJ

My 06 LX rarely downshifts with the CC on - only on the steepest hills that we have here in WI (yes, we do have some decent hills!). I'm sure the V6 has a bit more torque on tap at low RPMs, but based on the responses so far, it appears the 09's are more likely to do this.

I have never noticed a downshift while using CC with the 2006 V6.

Of course it would downshift going up a hill if needed. You just can't

compare the I4 & V6 Sonata. And with Oil at 77.77 a Barrell today and $2.80

a Gallon (I paid $3.79 Yesterday) the smaller engine just doesn't make cents!

On a sad note the Stock Market is now in the positive after another 700 point

fall today, and when the market rises, Gas prices rise :w00t:

My 09 I4 does this also. I don't think it's an issue per-say, but rather the nature of the beast. A 4 cylinder engine it going to be a little less gutsy at high speed. Combine that with an over-attentive cruise system (which I rather like) and a tranny that's trying to perform as efficiently as possible, and you get alot of shifts. I just thow mine into manual and leave it in 5th.

CC shouldn't downshift, it should also be used on flat land NOT on hilly country.
Some of you may experience the downshift because with a I4 you don't have enough power to maintain the speed selected. I think it's written in some manual that you shouldn't use CC on hilly country, seems to confuse the computer.

Define hilly country. I drive in MA and I am talking about a highway which is not totally flat, but is not hilly per say. CC should be able to deal with this kind of highway and as I said earlier I compare it to two other Honda Accords that I had (current 2005 and previous 2002), both with 2.4 I4 engines. Neither downshifted as our new 09 Sonata.

Another thing that I noticed (OP, I wonder if you noticed the same thing) - in order to overcome this rapid downshifting I switched to manual, but then I noticed that even when the display shows 5, I can still feel and see through the RPM that it downshifts...not as extreme as from 5 to 4 but still. Is it possible that it downshifts from 5 but keeps the display at 5 because it is in Manual mode? Or maybe this an Overdrive behind the 5th gear??
