I have a 2002 Sonata w/2.5 liter 4 cyl engine, auto trans, appx 80,000 miles. I have no trouble fault light showing. The car starts very weakly and then runs very roughly for about 30 to 45 seconds then stalls. During that time, I cannot accelerate the engine. I can not restart the car for several hours. I can not get the car on the road due to the lack of power and short running interval. I have replaced the fuel pump, cam position sensor and spark plugs. I have also drained all of the fuel from the tank and put fresh fuel back in.
Prior to the current problem, the car would run fairly well but had very poor acceleration from a standing start. 0-60 took almost 15 seconds! If the air cleaner and cover were removed and I tried to accelerate, the car would bog down and almost stall. Most cars will have stronger acceleration when the air cleaner is removed.
I am very desperate to find a solution or at least a few options I can check for. At this time we cannot afford $ to take it to a dealer for diagnostics or repair. Please Help! Thanks!

You said cam position sensor. What about the crank position sensor? I had that go out on me during my drive to work. Sounds exactly like what you are describing.

I have an 03 V6 but you should unhook that sensor and find a replacement from a junk yard. Have you read the codes with a scanner or gotten it done at an auto parts store? Find the codes and search....

Also, I bought a service manual for my sonata off ebay...it's worth the $$$.
