My 07 Sonata's grill is noticeably faded in areas. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything I can do to fix it (i.e spray paint)?

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

May I ask what you use to clean the grille or if you've used waxes/cleaners on the paint and inadvertently got some on the grille?

Looking at the photos, there are appear to be streaks where something seems to have been either wiped on or off.

Whether or not you deliberately rubbed something onto it may have had something to do with why it looks faded.

It would be more efficient for us, if you first WIPE OUT all those "extras," like rain drops... What's that bluish piece of tape on the top crome? Is that also some kind of a "treatment"? :whistling:

If any of that is car wax residue, I've used peanut butter successfully to remove that stuff.

Maybe you should just replace the grille.

The blue is called a reflection :D :innocent: I knew you were getting a bit old mama, but I thought you'd catch it :)
Probably wearing blue jeans.

I agree that it looks like you've got some wax or polish on the grill, but if it is faded, then you have a couple options.

There are several paints specifically for plastic, which may work well, or you can replace the grill with an OEM or aftermarket piece.
Are you still under warrantee?

I had a faded piece of plastic on my car and the dealer replaced it under warranty.

Duplicolor vinyl and fabric paint.

No preping, no priming, just paint it. Also, that paint does not smudge so its way more easy to paint with that compared to any other paint.

You can buy the matt finish or the high gloss. Its a very high quality paint used to paint the seats and the vinyl dash. Brings new life to plastics. Actually I was thinking even if the grill is not faded it would look better with this black finish.

Please can anyone let me know if the Hyundai logo is removable or just stuck on using some glue?

The Hyundai logo comes off, it's held on by 2 small screws from behind.

Turtle wax used to sell a wax cleaner for painted plastic surfaces. I am sure the other wax companies probably sell it also. Try using that on the grill and see if there is a difference.

#1 that is a blue striped shirt, I can see the khaki shorts under it.

#2 Like everyone else here, it looks like wax residue. I've gotten some on the grille and other plastic trim (most annoying is when it gets on the plastic triangle behind the back windows)

If it IS faded it should be covered under the bumper to bumper warranty (50,000?)
But it looks like wax to me. The stuff is a pain to get off...

Here's a nifty trick you can use to clean off dried/hardened wax on matte/plastic trims.

Just today I decided to experiment using a plastic eraser to remove some wax off the rear delta trim that won't even come off with a toothbrush and water.

Worked like a charm. I don't know if any eraser will work but the one I used did:

Staedtler Mars Plastic
Latex Free

The eraser is white with a blue and white jacket.

Cost: 99 cents at my local art supplies store.

Thank you very much for all the replies.

I never even thought that it could be wax. I bet that is it. I will try the suggested tips to remove the wax and let you know how it goes. Hopefully it is just wax and I won't have to repaint it.

And whoever said I was wearing khaki shorts and a blue striped shirt is correct.

Thanks!

Norman, If this idea was really coming from YOUR head -- you're a genius. I found an old piece of dark gray rubber eraser, used for Charcoal painting, and decided to try it on my black grill, which I stained last time I waxed the car.... IT REALLY WORKS LIKE A CHARM!

I took my car this morning to a nearby dealer to have the passenger seat taken care of for the "passenger air bag off" light, and I had the eraser in the car. I still had a few spots which I left untouched, so I showed the trick to the service manager -- and he was stunned....

Yo Mama!

I haven't heard or read about anyone else doing it so maybe it was an original idea.

Either way, I'm just glad it works. It's just refreshing to see how a 99c item works so well when I could have blown X dollars on some cleaner that does a half-arse job. Environmentally friendly too!
