I purchased a 2008 Sonata and got a 3 month subscription to XM. I travel quite a bit in CT, MA, NH, PA, NJ, NY. I sometimes lose the XM signal when driving. Nothing is blocking the view to the sky...it just kind of goes out for 1 or 2 seconds.

Can someone tell me if the factory installation is a direct wired or if there is a way to keep the signal from going out? Anyway I can install my own antenna.

I do have a sirius radio and have a direct install for the antenna signal and I never lose the signal.

Thanks
Jeff

the xm unit is in the trunk on the passenger side. I'm in the process of using the factory xm antenna for my portable xm unit.

Very occaisionally I lose the XM signal for a second or so with no apparent obstructions above. Sounds like faint FM interstation static.

XM and Sirius sometimes use different ways of getting the signal from the satellite to your radio, so take this with a grain of salt. When I first installed my Sirius I mounted the antenna on the roof; no skipping. Then I mounted it behind the dash; skipped a lot. Then I put it on top of the dash; better but it occasionally skipped. Then I put a metal plate under the antenna: it almost never skips.

YMMV, depending on where you live and which service (Sirius or XM) you use but your factory antenna is in the best spot. IIRC, there's a plug on the back of your factory radio for the XM antenna, so it's "direct wired."

Thanks, I may look into adding a different Antennae. I noticed today that as I was driving the signal went in an out alot. I was driving in a valley where on each side of the road were mountains. I assume that this was the issue, but I dont have that problem with my Sirius setup.

Thanks
Jeff

Does anyone know if there is a signal amplifier with the stock XM headunit or components?

Thanks
Jeff
