Noob here looking into manual trans 06+ Sonata's (and Elantra's). I see that the engine changed (maybe slightly) for 09. Did the clutch and manual trans change as well, or are they carryovers from the 06-08's? Do the man. trans generally hold up well on the 06+ models? I'm asking b/c I see a few posts about clutch problems.

I thought all V6 Sonatas had automatic transmissions so how is it that you have a manual? Of course you did mention a fluid change so obviously you do have an auto. Manual transmissions don't use transmission fluid they use gear oil/lube.

FYI, the OP was asking specifically about manual transmissions.

09 V6 models do not get manual transmissions. You're correct sir! "Only 5% of our market requested manual transmissions", hence the change.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I'm only interested in a manual trans. My local dealer has new/2009/GLS/sticks for $15,400. I was going to go with an 06-07 used Accord, but the price + warranty on the Sonata is tough to beat. I test drove an 08 Elantra stick and liked it, but it's only a grand less (at this dealership) than Sonata. After figuring in 2-3 timing belt changes on the Elantra the price is about the same. Any info for this NOOB to Hyundai is appreciated!

'07 just turned 27,000 no issues related to clutch so far (I think). I am having an issue with my flex pipe rattling (again) dealer has replaced it a couple times as well as the motor mounts and it just started to return again. The motor does flex back and forth more than with the automatic because of the constant on/off thottle when you shift. I do like driving it with the stick and am not the easiest driver. The car gets pretty much full throttle in all gears and normal shifts will be just over 4,000 rpm. For those that don't have the stick, yes the Sonata does have a rev limiter that kicks in just over 6,000 rpm at redline so you don't blow the motor. :innocent: :whistling:

The funny part is that the automatics will also go to redline before shifting if you hold it down enough. My "normal" driving in the automatic yielded about the same shift points as I do manually, just not as much fun.

Besides that all is well. Just don't ask Sort Em about his '09 clutch :whistling: .

I also drove an Elantra (automatic) for a couple weeks while they were trying to fix the rattle. Size, power, comfort theer is NO WAY I'd get an Elantra over a Sonata.
