i just bought a 1998 S reg Atoz+

when you floor the accelerator not driving and it runs very fast it 'pumps' on and off like you are pumping the accelerator

is this normal or a problem?

also makes that sound quietly when driving fast in 5th although drives steady
thanks
dan

Flooring it in idle is bad for engine. Not sure if Atoz has a rev limiter. Could be due to bad fuel pump, choked fuel filter/fuel lines or bad fuel. When you drive in 5th, your revs will not be that high and you may not see the problem, assuming it is one. Try flooring it in 3rd (not too often, though).

yup, fuel line
start to clean or replace the fuel filter under deck,
clean/replace strainer inside the tank before you
replace the pump

thanks - just trying to work out what noise is when driving fast now - one sounds a touch like the revving in the distance and the other a tad metallic / almost grating...
