Sonata 2006, 3.3 auto, made in Korea and purchased in the UK.
When changing up into 3rd gear (auto box) for the first time, there is a mild clunking noise. Sounds a bit like two metallic plates banging together. From then on, the gears are quiet and smooth, even when changing into 3rd again. So it only does it once.
Any ideas what is causing this noise?
The engine/auto box is obviously cold at this time.

Yeah, probably the ABS doing it's self check....

What's weird about this "clunk" is that it's inconsistent.... Some mornings I can hear it well at around 6-8 mph, some mornings at 10 mph, some it's very faint, some I don't hear it at all, but I can feel it, and then sometimes I feel and hear nothing....

That might be the reason you haven't noticed it yet, Nick.

Either way, it's normal, it's good, and it's welcome. :thumbsup:

No that noise sounds normal. It must be the ABS Test.

Thanks guys, I guess it is the self test. If it were a mechanical problem, it would probably always make a noise for the same running conditions.
It's kind of odd that I've only just started to notice this in the last 2 weeks, as the car is 18 months old with 15000 miles on the clock.
