catch can is used to clean oil from the recirculated air from the valve cover.
It would be installed inline between the valve cover and the intake tube connected to the throttle body.

In our car's case its the same one, some people on this board have stuck a breather filter on.

Valve cover(usually PCV) --> catchcan --> intake tube
On some catchcans there will be a third connection on the bottom that is to allow the "caught" oil to drain back into the block. If not, then the catch can will need to be emptied every so often. Usually the same time you perform an oil change.

here is a write on a vw forum. But it is very similar on most cars. 2 hoses, and a possible drain hose, and mounting.

I plan on doing it soon.
Had some unexpected bills this month.
But I think it is a worthwhile investment and the addition on it will look sweet too. B)

it can increase HP, by allowing the intake tube to create a vacuum under the valve cover. This reduces friction for the valve train thereby adding a few ponies.

But the catch can's real purpose is the same as its name, its used to catch oil from the air being directed back to the intake. This way the air is clean, and prevents building up of grime inside the intake tube, throttle body, and intake plenum.

The air flows into the catchcan from the top, gravity pulls the oil droplets from the valve cover down, and the air flows back out the top of the catch can to the intake.
