Same bulbs, different base. That's why the H11's won't work without minor modifications.

Hey did these have the wire that comes from the factory harness to the ballast? I saw his lights up there, but didn't know if it had that or not?
Thanks!!

Yes! Glad it worked for you... Mine are still burning strong with no issues.

Believe me, i've wanted HID lights for so long I wasn't going to just take it lying down.

Thanks to i360, I was able to do this as well, and I took some good pics for you guys to better understand the process.

Here's what I posted on the other Hyundai Forums I frequent:

QUOTE
Good news for you HD owners...my Sonata used H11b bulbs up until yesterday, now I have an H11 5000K HID kit. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Modifications from H11b to H11 were extremely simple, as long as you don't mind modifying a small part of your headlight assembly.

Here is the inside of my Sonata's headlights before the conversion. This uses the H11b bulb, which has two prongs sticking out of the side to slide into that connector. If the HD headlight assemblies look like this, then you can do the same thing I did.

(IMG:http://crookedh.com/munky/hids/102_0505.jpg)

I took out those three screws holding in the H11b base:

(IMG:http://crookedh.com/munky/hids/102_0512.jpg)

I then slid the bulb connector off of the base:

(IMG:http://crookedh.com/munky/hids/102_0520.jpg)

I broke off those tabs, which will essentially turn that base into a normal H11 base, allowing any normal H11 bulb to screw into it.

The pictures of the end result had to wait, but I'll get some tonight. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Oh, and I plan on relocating those ballasts to somewhere out of sight once it gets warmer. ;)

Very nice... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

If you do decide to mount the ballasts in a better location I would suggest on the side fenders.

Once you remove the headlight from the car look on the side fenders but a little in the back.

I used industrial strength Velcro to mount them, works perfectly.

I bought my kit from AJ, he frequents a lot of Hyundai forums under the name "fixer" or "hyundaifixer"

Email him at FGmotorsports@gmail.com, or check out his myspace at myspace.com/FGmotorsports

If you don't have $150 to spend, I recommend Apexcone Kits from Diode Dynamics.

http://www.diodedynamics.com/catalog/produ...products_id=113

Diode Dynamics is ran by a man named Paul J. McCain, he's a nice guy, and very reliable. He's also a sponsor on crookedH.

ok i just got my HID kit from DDM tuning today. i have a couple questions:

1) munk, what size hole did you drill in the cap?

2) if i follow the directions of i360 and munk, should i be able to do this on my own? (i have no electrical wiring experience)

thanks in advance.

use a 1" or 25mm hole driller. yes, just follow the instructions... just make sure you connect the positive to positive and ground to ground (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

little tip about the drilling of the hole...

use a "UNIBIT" with a 1" mark on it... makes the job SO easy.. (looks like a cone bit with ridges on it).. borrow one if you dont have one... its easier than trying to use a paddle or spade bit (if you dont have clamps)

Slacker, I know...

Here is the start of the tutorial for adding HIDs into the 2009 Sonata.

1) Unplug the headlight power wire from headlight assembly, one on each headlight.
2) Remove the two bolts from the top of the headlight (10mm socket wrench)
3) Gently pry the headlight off of the car, be careful as you can scratch your paint.

4) Once the headlight is off take it to your workspace.
http://img504.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imag0008hd7.jpg

5) Remove the H11b bulb from the socket
http://img231.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imag0010jp4.jpg

6) With a phillips head screwdriver remove the three screws visible in the picture above.

7) Pull the black connector piece out of the headlight, you'll need to remove the wired H11B connector on the bottom (This un-clips), and remove the lip that holds it in place. The reason being is this is what stops an ordinary H11 bulb from locking into place.

8) Now there are two ways to fix it so a h11 bulb will fit.
A) You can dremel or file it down so its flat (I did this)
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) Or you can cut it across
The most important thing is to not alter where the headlight bulb twists into, there is no modifications needed here. You need to remove the excess on the bottom of the black piece for the bulb to lock into place. This lip held the previous H11B connector in place. Once this is completed you can reattach the black piece with the three screws, unless your doing the next step which is easier to accomplished with the piece removed. Make sure to reattach when completed, this is what holds your headlight bulb in place.

9) This is optional but highly recommended. Have you looked at the light your headlights cast? Did you notice each beam has two boxes over the pattern? Well these need to be covered so you wont blind oncoming traffic. They are two small squares in the projector housing (See pic)
http://img372.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imag0011pj8.jpg

Did you try the upgrade without covering those square holes? I don't understand why it is necessary to cover them when they were there in the first place for the halogen bulbs. Could you please explain?

What I used was 3m Flue Tape with a 600 degree rated temperature, cutting two small squares for each headlight and using a retractable wand with double sided tape at the end to reach in and cover them, it wasn't easy.
http://img510.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imag0012ai6.jpg

10) You'll need to splice the wires inside the headlight housing to accommodate your new HIDs. I used male/female connectors from the local auto parts store. I put the females on the headlight wires and used the males on the HID kit. Cut the black and yellow wires close to the old H11B connector and use the newly purchased connectors in its place, one on each wire (2).

11) Splice your HID kit power wires to fit the new connectors, they crimp on and hold pretty tight. You can get silicon to seal them if you want, I did not at this time. Purchase connectors that are shielded. They would go on the kit where the two metal plug things are in this picture.
http://plasmagarage.com/images/Metal_Tab1.jpg

12) Find a location to mount the ballasts. My kit is the DDM slim ballast kit so its simple to mount. I purchased industrial strength Velcro which is water resistant. My ballasts are mounted on the side fenders off to the side of the headlights. If you look in you wont even notice them. One side on the ballast and small ignitor and one side on the surface of the vehicle.

13) You'll need to cut a slightly less then one inch hole in the headlight dust cover piece (That screws into the headlight) so you can fit the HID bulb and power wires through. To me this was the most difficult thing. You may want someone with a drill press to do this which would be much easier, and cleaner.

14) Run your HID wires through the newly formed hole and use the rubber grommet (supplied with kit) to seal said hole.

15) Put your H11 HID bulb into the headlight housing, twist, and lock it into place, connect your newly formed wires from the HID kit to your headlight wires. Connect the kit to the ballasts, screw the headlight dust shield on and fasten the headlight into place. Reconnect your power wire back into the headlight assembly.

** When putting the headlight back on the car be aware of how much your tightening the bolts. Too much torque will crack the plastic on the top of the headlight if you over do it.

This setup is very capable of igniting the bulbs without a problem. I've never gotten the one bulb on one bulb off issue, where you would be required to use a wire harness. You could buy one if need be......

If anyone needs a better explanation I would be happy to offer when time permits.

I did not try them uncovered. The reason I did it was that HID are over three times as powerful as regular bulbs. Plus I want to be courteous to other drivers which seems to lacking nowadays in society.

The four squares is to light up the street and highway signs. If at the right angle you could shine it by the guy coming toward you and they would think you have high beams on. I got flashed plenty of times...
