The 2009 used the h11b low beam bulb. Anyone try using the plain old H11 to go HID ? You guys are pretty smart think it would work?

I researched this about three weeks ago in response to another post about HIDs for the 09 Sonata. The bulb base on the H11 is entirely different from the base on the H11B, so the H11 will not mount in the 09 Sonata headlamp assembly.

I've been researching this as well... What I believe is that the H11 & H11B are the same bulb from the top down to the base. They have the same three tabs in the same locations that lock into the headlight housing. They are also the same wattage and specifications. The only difference is the H11B bulbs have the actual connector on the bottom of the bulb, below the base. Which when the bulb is inserted it is turned to lock into the socket connector.

Good idea in theory for stock bulbs, the only issue is so far that Hyundai is the only one using them. And Osram are the only company that makes them. So this means you'll only be able to buy these bulbs from Hyundai. And the chance that the aftermarket picks these up are very very slim.

I'm still looking into this and believe it should work as follows.

You'll need to remove the H11B bulb from the vehicle.
Then remove the H11B connection from the bottom of the headlight housing.
Then splice the wires and connect H11 sockets to the existing Sonata wiring.
Insert the H11 bulb, twist and lock, then connect your new H11 connectors.

I already have the H11 sockets that I bought from Auto Illumination. I need to buy an H11 bulb to verify that it will fit into the headlight housing. And that the bulb and connector will fit inside the housing with the cover on. So basically I think its quite doable but will take some effort. I've been wanting HID lights for quite awhile and I don't think this will deter me.......

Does anyone have a write up on this for the HID install? I have had these in all my other cars & LOVED them, so I am wanting to get some for my Sonata, but I was running into the same problem, couldn't find the H11b.
Thanks!

Upon further recon....

I purchased an H11 bulb and it fits in the housing, its just blocked from completely locking in the housing from the H11B connector underneath. Once this is removed then it should work. The one problem I saw would be that the new bulb and socket more then likely wont fit into the headlight housing. But with HID you'll have to drill a hole in the headlight covering anyway so you may have to get the wires outside the cover to make the connection.

Here is a basic how-to, which we would use but a little modified.
http://www.jerrystout.us/sonata/tsb/hid%20conversion.pdf

So, after looking at the pics in the how-to...

You would remove the H11b connector and leave it to the side (Inside the housing). Install the HID kit like explained. In figure 5 the two power connectors are already in place which you could rig into the H11b connector.

I just need to see an actual H11 HID kit to see if these power connectors are exposed. If they are then you could slide them inside the H11b connector and be done. Which would make it much easier and no need to slice your factory wiring.

Like this:

(IMG:http://plasmagarage.com/images/Metal_Tab1.jpg)

Use those two exposed connectors and insert them into the H11B connector.

This should work....

Do most of the HID kits have them 2 exosed ends on them that you can snap into the H11b factory light connectors?? This is where I have always ran into trouble in the past & I didn't want to go hackin' into the new cars wiring if I didn't have to!!! My wife has a 08 Altima which uses H11 lights also, so I am going to get 2 kits while I am at it & they should work in each of them!

I have done the conversion and currently have H11 HIDs @ 6000k in my 2009 Sonata. You will need to do some modifications to make it work. I actually bought a second pair of headlights from ebay for this project. When I have time I will put together the steps I took to make it happen.

YES!

Please post or send me that information.

Have had my Entourage for 1 year really want to get an HID kit going but have the same H11b bulb as you... Winter is coming here in Toronto and it gets dark so early that the HID's will come in very handy driving at night.

Thanks very much.

I'm not worried about cutting into the factory 11b connector but from what you are saying the H11 HID kit bulbs will lock into the housing without modification? I just want to make sure that the only modification I will need to do is possibly splicing into the stock harness and not to the actual headlight housing.

Yes, the H11 bulbs will fit no problem. There is a little more then splicing though but its not extremely difficult. I will stop by later here and outline the steps. I've just been a little busy.

In Saudi Arabia the NF Sonata's have factory HID as an option. Im thinking they probebly have this for the 2009 aswell since they had it back when there was still the 2002 EF Sonata. Im going to ask the dealer if this option is available for 2009 and if it is what kit/bulbs are being used :) hopefully I will get some information for you guys :)

Slacker, I know...

Here is the start of the tutorial for adding HIDs into the 2009 Sonata.

1) Unplug the headlight power wire from headlight assembly, one on each headlight.
2) Remove the two bolts from the top of the headlight (10mm socket wrench)
3) Gently pry the headlight off of the car, be careful as you can scratch your paint.

4) Once the headlight is off take it to your workspace.
http://img504.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imag0008hd7.jpg

5) Remove the H11b bulb from the socket
http://img231.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imag0010jp4.jpg

6) With a phillips head screwdriver remove the three screws visible in the picture above.

7) Pull the black connector piece out of the headlight, you'll need to remove the wired H11B connector on the bottom (This un-clips), and remove the lip that holds it in place. The reason being is this is what stops an ordinary H11 bulb from locking into place.

8) Now there are two ways to fix it so a h11 bulb will fit.
A) You can dremel or file it down so its flat (I did this)
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) Or you can cut it across
The most important thing is to not alter where the headlight bulb twists into, there is no modifications needed here. You need to remove the excess on the bottom of the black piece for the bulb to lock into place. This lip held the previous H11B connector in place. Once this is completed you can reattach the black piece with the three screws, unless your doing the next step which is easier to accomplished with the piece removed. Make sure to reattach when completed, this is what holds your headlight bulb in place.

9) This is optional but highly recommended. Have you looked at the light your headlights cast? Did you notice each beam has two boxes over the pattern? Well these need to be covered so you wont blind oncoming traffic. They are two small squares in the projector housing (See pic)
http://img372.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imag0011pj8.jpg

What I used was 3m Flue Tape with a 600 degree rated temperature, cutting two small squares for each headlight and using a retractable wand with double sided tape at the end to reach in and cover them, it wasn't easy.
http://img510.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imag0012ai6.jpg

10) You'll need to splice the wires inside the headlight housing to accommodate your new HIDs. I used male/female connectors from the local auto parts store. I put the females on the headlight wires and used the males on the HID kit. Cut the black and yellow wires close to the old H11B connector and use the newly purchased connectors in its place, one on each wire (2).

11) Splice your HID kit power wires to fit the new connectors, they crimp on and hold pretty tight. You can get silicon to seal them if you want, I did not at this time. Purchase connectors that are shielded. They would go on the kit where the two metal plug things are in this picture.
http://plasmagarage.com/images/Metal_Tab1.jpg

12) Find a location to mount the ballasts. My kit is the DDM slim ballast kit so its simple to mount. I purchased industrial strength Velcro which is water resistant. My ballasts are mounted on the side fenders off to the side of the headlights. If you look in you wont even notice them. One side on the ballast and small ignitor and one side on the surface of the vehicle.

13) You'll need to cut a slightly less then one inch hole in the headlight dust cover piece (That screws into the headlight) so you can fit the HID bulb and power wires through. To me this was the most difficult thing. You may want someone with a drill press to do this which would be much easier, and cleaner.

14) Run your HID wires through the newly formed hole and use the rubber grommet (supplied with kit) to seal said hole.

15) Put your H11 HID bulb into the headlight housing, twist, and lock it into place, connect your newly formed wires from the HID kit to your headlight wires. Connect the kit to the ballasts, screw the headlight dust shield on and fasten the headlight into place. Reconnect your power wire back into the headlight assembly.

** When putting the headlight back on the car be aware of how much your tightening the bolts. Too much torque will crack the plastic on the top of the headlight if you over do it.

This setup is very capable of igniting the bulbs without a problem. I've never gotten the one bulb on one bulb off issue, where you would be required to use a wire harness. You could buy one if need be......

If anyone needs a better explanation I would be happy to offer when time permits.

i360,

Did you install 55w or 35w lights? I have an Azera with 55w halogens and am going to attempt this.
