Hi all,

Quick question--

When my 02 Elantra accelerates, I hear a sort of high-pitched squealing noise coming from the engine for a little bit...then after a few seconds it stops. It's almost as if a belt is loose or something.

Is that what it is, a loose belt? If so, what belt is it? We just brought the car into the mechanic to check the timing belt, and he said it looked fine. I did a google search on this problem, and someone with a similar problem with a VW was told that it was a loose fan belt. But does an Elantra have fan belts? The only belt I see mentioned with Elantras is a "serpentine belt", which I'm not quite sure what that is.....

lol as you can see I know practically nothing about cars. Does anyone have any suggestions about this problem?

Thanks :)
Dave

Does it happen every time you accelerate or only when you first get going? Do you ever hear any squealing when turning the wheel?

The Elantra has 3 drive belts: A/C belt that drives the A/C compressor, the power steering belt that drives the P/S pump and the alternator belt which drives the alternator and the water pump.

I find that my belts will squeal after rain or when the air is moist if they're loose.

My guess is that one of the drive belts is either loose or getting worn. If you don't hear anything when turning the wheel, then it's probably the alternator belt. You should have that belt adjusted or replaced. Also check to make sure you have enough coolant in the reservoir.

If you adjust yourself, make sure not to over tighten.
