First post and I'm already complaining.
I've got a 2002 Elantra. Everything was fine in the car till yesterday. I was going up a slight hill and noticed the car was struggling. I looked down at my RPM gauge to see it going back and forth from 1000 to 0. Then the check engine light appeared and the car stalled. I coasted it into a parking lot. I tried to start it again and it would turn over and fire up for a second before stalling. I called a tow truck and got it to an auto repair place up the road (not a dealership). They looked at it all day and it stalled once on them, when they first started it up. They took it out on the road, the highway, let it run in the lot, and it worked fine all day. No trouble codes in the computer, no parts that they looked at were bad (don't know what they looked at). I even drove it home.
The guy mentioned that there was a recall for some Elantra fuel pumps, where the wires would corrode inside the pump. What he was describing kinda seemed like it would've made the gas tank explode, but what do I know. He said to call a dealership.
I did a quick google search and couldn't pull up any recalls for 02's aside from something about the fuel tank assembly and they were from 03.
I don't want to take it to a dealership and them say "We couldn't find anything wrong, but give us a pile of money for looking," or "we can't find what was really wrong, so we replaced a whole bunch of stuff, now give us a pile of money and hope the problem got fixed."
I also don't want to risk just driving it, as I don't have much leave time built up at my job.
Anyone know off the top of their heads what might be the problem?
Also I apologize if this has been covered in a prior thread. I searched but didn't pull up anything.
