Hello everyone,

I live in PA and I'm having a heck of a time locating a 4 cylinder Sonata with the Option 3. I really only care about the Sunroof. I don't like leather so this is the only one that I want to get. The problem is that our of 5 dealers that I have emailed, only 2 have replied and nether one had any with the option 3. To make matters worse I only like the blue and dark grey so it'll make life even more difficult. They do say that they can put the sunroof in but I don't trust this procedure as everything I heard in the past says that roof will leak. I know at least for the Honda the dealership can check the entire area to try to locate a specific trim and color, doesn't Hyundai have something like that as well? If I can't locate one in the next few weeks I'm going to drop this off my list and most likely get a Altima.

Thanks,
Nick

Sonatas are assembled down in Alabama I think - I wonder if it would be worth trying to get a dealer to custom order one?

I bought my 09 Sonata GLS 2.4L with option 3 a couple of months ago at Team Hyundai here in southern Maryland. The GLS with option 3 package must be pretty popular around here as Team seems to have a couple option 3 equipped GLSs in stock from time to time. They can be reached at 301-862-9150 or on the internet at www.teamhyundaimd.com.

By the way, Team Hyundai is about a four hour drive from Philly.

I appreciate the information, but I won't go to the ends of the world looking for it. Maryland is about a good 2 hrs from where I live and that's hitting the boarder from Delaware. If I can't find it in the area then off I go looking at something else. And from the person having the 30k blown engine in an other topic, I really don't think I want to deal with Hyundai if I had such a problem anyway. At least with a Honda/Nissan they may be a rattletrap but at least their engines are bulletproof.

These stories do not tell me that honda or nissan engines are bulletproof.

Nick,

Where about in Philly are you? I've purchased several cars from Springfield Hyundai. They pull the same gimmicks as other dealerships, so you have to walk in there knowing what price you should pay. Haha I think when I walk in there, they pull out the invoice automatically and start from there. Well anyways, I'm happy with their service, and just this past Friday I was in there getting service done on my car and the sales woman who helped me out with my wife's santa fe asked how my wife was doing and how my son was doing. (its been 2 years since we've bought my wife's car so that impressed me) Well if you check them out, ask for Rosa. And believe me if you go with Hyundai, you'll be happy. But like with any car, just keep good service records.

You have to take these with a grain of salt. The new Honda engines are not very tolerable if you even go lightly over redline like the F series engines could take. The only case out of all of these that I would have to side on the customer is the Nissan who changes the oil themselves. I have seen my cousins take their cars into dealerships for oil changes and have them almost fail a week later because some idiot didn't tighten a filter or bolt.

I have to feel for the OP in the other thread because like myself we change our oil and will do it better than any other dealership in the world. Why? Because we take our times to do it right.

The bottom line in any case is to get a second opinion and if the blame falls on the manufacture, sue them in small claims. I doubt that lawyers for Hyundai or Honda would show up and will want to at least settle for 1/2 the bill if not all of it.

FYI, Hyundai is the largest manufacturer of engines on the planet earth. Mercedes has even contracted Hyundai to manufacture all of its engines beyond 2010 I believe. The words Hyundai and crap engines should never be used in the same sentence.

Hyundai was also a leading force in the development and build of the "world engine" which is used in many makes and models to date. Every vehicle has issues at some point.

I am lost. You say to take these stories with a grain of salt, but you won't buy the Sonata you clearly want because of one posters story about his engine failing at 30 k.....wheres the taking of a grain of salt with that one? Maybe you just want to have a reason not to buy another Hyundai. Nonetheless, i wish you luck with whatever you purchase

It's possible that I didn't convey what I was thinking clearly. I am taking most of the stories with a grain of salt because most of those articles with the exception of the one Nissan owner were performed by dealers/shops. The probability of a screw up by the dealer/shop is more likely to cause a failure than you doing it yourself, not saying that doing it yourself won't ever cause a problem. Having Hyundai not even examine the motor is questioning my judgment of the company as they need to find out who's at fault for the blown engine. If the OP can provide notes on when he changed the oil it should be enough for any company to go and at least review what the root cause of the failure was, not say "oh you didn't have a shop do this, we won't look at it". I have to say that I haven't heard both sides of the story but it makes me wonder.
