Hey all,

I have a 2006 LX with 25k miles.. within the past 1,500 miles or so, I notice there is a squeaking/creaking/rubbing sound coming from the steering wheel column when I turn (and cut, specifically) the wheel at stopped and low speeds (such as pulling out of the driveway or manuevering into a parking spot). At faster speeds this doesn't happen.

I intend on bringing this to the dealer. What should I expect, and should I bring this in ASAP?

Thanks for the help!

As long as it sounds like it's coming from the cabin and not the engine, I'd guess it's bearings or something like that along the steering column. I know power steering pumps can squeak as they fail or if they're running low on fluid, but that would be heard from your engine.

I'd check your fluids and be sure everything's up and nothing's leaking around the pump. If all looks good, you should be fine, besides the annoyance of the squeaky wheel.

Can you duplicate this noise with the Engine off, trying to just turn the Wheels?

If so this might be a rubbing Brake Back Plate. My Ex Florida shop lubed it. There

is nothing to be lubed. On the 3rd try they got it!

Haven't really looked on the Sonata but my Sequoia had the same exact issue. It turned out to be the grommet/seal on the firewall was "dry" and would squeek/groan as the shaft turned. Also only noticeable going slow like driveways/parking spaces. I took some silicone grease (not the spray lubes) and using a Q-tip, lubed the whole area where it was touching. It's been a couple years now and noise has not returned.

I actually had this issue a while back. The dealer will need to replace the clock spring. In almost all cases I've read about (and my own), this solved the problem, but I did read about one that had to have the entire steering wheel replaced to solve the problem.

Expect a little resistance if you have to get the wheel replaced - it's $1,100 (just for the parts). Even though warranty will cover it, many dealers don't like to replace expensive items without a fight.

WHy don't dealers like doing expensive repairs they get compensated for anyways?

I also have this problem. Only at slow speeds. Doesn't bother me as much as the 'high pitched whine at 65 mph'....

Thanks to everyone for the input.

The power steering fluid is at "high max" on cold, but that shouldn't be causing this.

Leaving the car in park in the garage and turning the wheel doesn't produce any unusual sound or feeling.. only when the car is in gear. Anyway, I'll have to find time to take this in - at least now I know what to expect and guide them in the right direction if need be.

I know this post is old, but just in case anyone needs to know for future reference - lower steering column boot was dry. Lubbed it up and it hasn't been an issue since (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)
