Automatic do in fact have several clutches and once their gone you have the transmission rebuilt or replaced.
However concerning the torque converter (which allows for it to idle in gear)one side of the torque converter is driven at flywheel speed. There is a fan-like series of blades around the entire driven side .These blades push the transmission fluids against a reciprocal set of blades connected to the drive spline of the transmissiom. The number of blades and pitch angle at which they are set determines how much "slip" occurs until the second set reaches the speed and torque of the first .Usually torque starts coming in at around 1000-1200 rpm and full on around 1300-1800.
Newer vehicles (ours included) have an electronic "lockup "device that holds the front and back together(OD) depending on load, rpm, throttle positionect.
That's why when the accelerator is pushed downward quickly the OD unlocks allowing the engine to rev during the shift downward to a lower gear keeping the engine in the torque band.
Hope this helps as it is just a basic overlook and not very detailed.

The automatic transmission is a terribly complex device, your summary sounds good to me Tango.

When I was looking for a new car, I saw a 2007 Dodge Caliber with CVT (continuously variable transmission), but it only gets 29 MPG Highway, so **** that.

Thanx guys .
It's really much more complicated than that, but way too much to get into here.
I learned from researching parts and such when I had my 70 and 1/2 Camaro, built to the hilt 350,built to bark the tires into 3rd 350turbo trans w/2600 stall racing converter, and 411 positive traction rear end. Ah those were the days!Smokem for the first 150 foot and still turn low 8's at 84 in an eigth. :innocent:

manual trannies are so much easier to deal with. Easier to tear-down and rebuild, and easier to maintain.
