The filter is a spectre brand cone filter from Autozone: $25.00
The pipe is a 3"-2" PVC reducter from Home Depot: $2.00

I painted the reducer and shaved off the lip on the inside with a Dremel. Noticible gains especially when starting from second gear and cruising around at 40mph in 4th gear. And the best part is that I can put the stock filter back in in less than 5 minutes, that way the dealership will never know.

I also included a pic of my garage and bikes: 85 Nighthawk 450 (for my fiancee) and an 86 Magna 700 (for me)

Thoughts?

Theoretically it's a bad idea for your health, BUT I can't imagine that you'd be breathing in hardly ANY of it considering it's directly hooked up to your intake... so it's mostly being sucked into your engine, which should burn off any of the vapors. And if the engine doesn't burn them off, your Catalytic Converter most certainly should. The only time I would ever imagine you MIGHT be at risk is if

1) You run your car for a long time and then shove your head in your hood and breathe really deeply for long periods of time (you shouldn't be working on your car when it's hot anyway)

2) You're sitting still on a hot road (stuck in traffic for instance) and you have the blower on full, and then you switch it to recirculate the air and sit there for a day.

Not that 2's a great idea anyway since it recirculates the carbon dioxide too, so more than likely you'd feel lightheaded or sick from lack of oxygen sooner than you'd feel any effects from any possible escaping vapors from the PVC.

On the other hand, the coupler that I'm using in my setup is made Silicone (that's what Weapon-R includes in their intake setups), so it should never have any issues.

In summary.... You should be just fine, but you may wish to change the PVC reducer to one made from either

1) Silicone
or
2) High Temperature Resistant Rubber.

I know for a fact you can pick up the latter at Home Depot or Lowes, or any other large hardware retailer.

to add to that.. i dont know what you're looking for from an intake.. but that fat tube behind the intake tube is a noise dampener (if im correct) and makes the whole intake system quieter... i got the same spectre system fro only $56 so it wasnt that much more (and probably easier ) to install then what you did..

but i mean if you just want the car to breathe better thats straight too... and i dont think the dealership is gonna say much about an intake... i took mine in the other day and they said it was fine

but whatever makes you happy though... as far as the whole poisioning thing i dont know about that... i cant imagine itd be bad unless like your engine caught on fire and burnt the pvc.. (but hopefully youd be away from the car anyways)

Just for the record, PVC only gives off a toxic fume when it is burning or on fire. Just because it gets a little warm, it is not harmful.

This is the MSDS sheet on the material that the reducer is made from. Charlotte Pipe is one of the biggest PVC manufactures.

I work with PVC pipe all day every day. Unless it is burnt to the point of making smoke, there is no danger, and it will take a torch to get it hot enough to burn.

YOu can also get a muffler shop to make you a 2.5" to 3" coupler out of metal.

Thanks for your input everybody. I'm going to monitor the situation, I've been checking on it a couple times here and there to see how hot its getting. So far, it hasn't really gotten that hot. I'll probably end up finding a new solution over the winter, because as soon as there's snow on the ground and salt everywhere I'm putting my stock airbox cover back on. But for right now, this seems to be working out pretty well. I reset my ecu and filled up and I'm going to see what kind of MPG increases I get (if any).

Oh, and the red wire is the power wire for my little subwoofer:
