Just before my car went out of warranty coverage, my back left electric door lock died. The dealer replaced it. Now, I am a few thousand miles past warranty coverage and my drivers side electric lock died. I have to use the key to lock and unlock instead of the button or keyless entry. I took the door panel apart to get to the part, got all the screws off the inner panel (all metal) but I cannot figure out how to get it off to get to the parts. Does anyone know how to get into the inner workings of the door? I figure the other 2 will go soon. (I should have bought the warranty that covers everything to 100k miles)

So the lock/unlock button will operate all other doors except the driver door? Is the symptom the same for the keyless remote and the driver's side door button?

You mention just before your Warranty expired the Dealer worked on this

problem. How long ago was this? You might have an additional 12 Months of

Warranty for that specific repair. If the problem is related I could see Hyundai

taking care of this.

Hey did you know that the new Accents still have Windows you crank up, and

Lock buttons you have to pull yourself. Ew :w00t:

I have attached Hyundai's shop directions for servicing the door and inspecting the lock actuator/switch/relay. You can find all of this information at www.hmaservice.com, which has a wealth of information available free after registering.

When you log in, click SHOP on the left, then select SONATA(NF) for the '06-'09 generation, then your specific engine.

Ok, all the door locks except for the drivers door work with the remote control and the lock unlock button in the car. You can see the manual lock/unlock tab move when you hit the lock/unlock button but it does not fully deploy or unlock. Same thing as what was repaired on the back door.
I had the back door lock actuator replaced last month but I drove over 3000 miles on vacation and now have over 62,000 miles.
With the PDF file that was provided above, it looks like I need to remove the driver's door window glass to be able to remove the inner metal door panel. Then I can get to the part for trouble shooting/replacement.
Anyone know a good place to order the driver's door lock actuator. The actuator must have a part that wears out around 60,000 miles when you live in Arizona where our temps run around 180 degrees in the summer.
Thanks for the help.....

We have a member here, Bobad, who had posted a couple years back about

using the Lock Cycle sparingly. I would not have given it a second thought. I

do see the Hyundai (Mopar  ) Warranty Work is good for 12 Months

or 12,000 Miles at my great Arizona Dealer! :trophy:

ya warranty good for 12 months.....too bad it's a different actuator.

It might be worth your time to have the dealer replace the acuator then you put everything back together. Just a thought. Maybe spend a few bucks and save a few bucks to get everything back together and working in a timely fashion.

Hey catpuke.....now there's a moniker I'd discard....thanks for your help here.

But if you just let the dealer do it, you dont have the satisfaction of figuring it out and doing it yourself. Also, since this seems to be a recurring problem and I am out of warranty, it would be good to know how to fix it myself.

I got the window out, still having problems getting the inner door panel off. I need to figure out if I need to undo some more screws. Will consult the PDF again. When I figure all this out, will share my knowledge for others.

Like you I am excellent in taking things apart.

Unlike you I have no idea how to put things together agaim.

I wish you luck. I have always wanted to take apart my Sonata!

I tore the door apart which was no easy task. Got the lock mechanism to where I could see it, hold it, inspect it but not fully remove it from the door. I could not dismantle the outer door handle to get it fully released. Once I could see that much of it, I realized that to take it apart any further would probably do me no good and get me into trouble. You have to remove the shiny inner portion of the outside door handle to get to a screw to remove the locking mechanism completely. I could not get this cover off and did not want to break it.
Looking at the lock mechanism, it is all encased in plastic and I would not know the actuator (which is dead) from the rest of the system.
Needless to say, I put it all back together and called the dealer to order the part for them to install.
Thankfully, I got it all back together and working (except for what was already broken).

Did they quote you a price for the part and installation? I'm also at 62,000 miles, but I've yet to have issues with any of my door locks (knock on wood).

You have to completely strip the door of all components, and remove the door glass from the regulator, to get to the actuator (actually the latch assembly, which integrates the actuator). I'ts a bugger..

I had a 2006 Sonata and my drivers door lock went out after the warranty and they wanted like $400.00 to fix it. So i just used my key to unlock the door :) But you would think they would be able to master a door lock? Seems like its just not one car but a few having door lock problems..

The part at the dealer is $148.83
The complete price from service dept at dealer is $378 for install.
I had the service tech tell me how to get the door apart to replace the part. After doing the trial run the other day, It took me a total of 50 minutes start to finish to install the door lock mechanism.
But, now the door unlocks as it is supposed to but the electric "lock" does not completely lock it.
Here is the symptom, when I turn the key or use the manual lock/unlock switch/lever in the car, it takes about 1 pound of pressure to unlock the door. When I try to lock it, twice the force is required to make it lock. So, I wonder if there is something that is not perfectly in line or is bound up somehow causing the solenoid to not have enough power to lock the door.
It seems now that the only option is to take it all apart and start over testing along the way. Yikes!
If you are brave enough to try this yourself, the trick to getting under the outer door handle to loosen that screw:
once you have the key cylinder removed, simply grasp the outer handle and bang your other hand onto your hand pushing it towards the back of the door. This pops it right off.

WOW! $230 for labor on a $148 part?! It's no wonder you chose to do it yourself.

Keep us updated on how it all turns out. If you decide to take it all apart again, perhaps you can take pictures along the way and make a DIY for madderhatter to post in the bible (aka the jerrystout site). I suspect many of the members here will hang onto their Sonata's LONG after the warranty expires, and every DIY will help in the later years.

My DIY is with Maddhatter. He will format it properly, work his magic and have it available soon.
Save $230 and have fun doing it....
