Dear J,

I had a similar problem, and had to find a solution. I tried buying the alleged custom fit/interconnecting plug wire harness from J.C. Whitney. No workee.

I bought the flat four wire connector universal kit from Autozone, a pack of Detroit connectors, and electrical crimper/stripper pliers. This universal wire harness is about 12 feet long, and the wire set splits to the left and right side. The instructions were easy to follow. The wiring runs inside the bumper and routes through a drain hole in the left and right tail light mount. Remove the left and right tail light fixtures and allow to dangle.

From memory, the green left turn wire and white ground go to the left, and the brown, yellow and green right turn wire go to the right. The hardest part was matching the one green wire on the left tail light mount that provides your blinker.

The brake light is easy to match up, you just use the Detroit connecting splice to connect the wires without stripping and electrical tape. The counter attendant will show you exactly what a Detroit splice connector is. Running lights were also easy.

I have helped several other Santa Fe owners since doing mine, and the install now takes about 15 minutes. After installation, connect to your trailer and verify. The nice thing with the Detroit connector is that to undo a mistake is easy.

Byron
