I have a 2000 Elantra with a broken speedo cable. I unscrewed the cable and when I pulled it off, the square drive remained in the fitting on the transmission. I tried pulling it out, but it didn't come easily. I removed the bolt, and tried to pull the whole fitting out, but it didn't come easily either. Anybody have experience working with the speedo cable? I can try pulling harder, but don't want to break something.

My sons car has exactly the same problem!! We've been soaking it with Liquid Wrench but so far no luck in pulling it out. I want to try to heat it but I'm afraid that there might be a plastic gear inside. Going to try using a soldering iron to pinpoint the heating.

I hope someone can reply to help us out.

GOT IT!!

I've been soaking the broken drive with Liquid Wrench for a lengthy amount of time.

I was concerned that I might do some damage if I were to use a micro torch so instead I took a 40 watt (up to 900 degree) soldering iron and stood it up with the tip on the broken drive for about 20 minutes. With a pair of vice grips I was able to wiggle the broken piece out.

10 minutes later the car was up and running with the new cable in place.
