My father in law just picked up a new 07 Sonata as part of the model year clear out. 2 days after he had it, the roof stopped working.. dealer replaced a fuse and said bring it back if it happens again... duh. 3 weeks later same issue.

He hasn't taken it in yet, but I find it a bit unusual that this happened again.. short somewhere I suspect.
Has anyone else had this issue and if so what was the cause and the final repair solution?

Thanks

I have not had any problem with the sunroof in my Sonata. The dealer will have to do a more thorough inspection of everything to see why the fuse is going. There is obviously something wrong there that will be covered by the warranty.

My mistake.. it's an 08 Sonata.. 3 fuses now.. dealer keeps saying it works (cos they replace the fuse).. come and pick it up.. few days later it blows again.
It can be working, gets parked overnight.. next morning, it's blown again. These guys don't seem interested in finding the issue. I'm going there with my Father in Law later this afternoon and have a little chat with the service team.

This is crap!

wait, are you saying that the fuse is blowing by itself and the car isnt even on? just "overnight, the fuse blows on its own"?

He'll park it in the garage overnight, fire it up in the morning and the roof won't work unless the fuse is replaced.

I just got back from the dealer and they said they wanted to keep it to see if it blows so they can diagnose the issue... well that's crap.. why can't they diagnose it when it blows and the car gets driven right over?

The Service "Advisor" said if it happens AGAIN.. maybe the shop foreman would place a call to Hyundai Canada to see if they have heard of the issue.. my reply was.. why can't he call now and ask?? Dumb stupid look across the counter from me..

I understand that electricals are a bugger.. but the service team at Ontario Hyundai in Whitby are being a bit difficult.

I hope they don't give me a run around if/when I have an issue with mine.

ok, so as soon as starts the car up, it blows.. weird..

i would try finding another deal to go to their service dept. if another one is anywhere close.. explain that the other place would really find the problem.. they will be more likely to look into it to "show up" the other dealer..

I had a similar issue with the power windows (but not the sunroof) on my 06. It turned out that the plug on the BACK of the fuse block (under the dash) wasn't secured properly from the factory and had a loose connection. The dealer plugged it back in securely (and checked all the other ones while they were in there) and I haven't had a problem since.

Good luck.

So it's not popping when he goes to open the sunroof then, right ? Like it could have sticky seals causing it to get kind of stuck overnight and overloading the circuit in the morning ?

If it's just blowing for no reason that is interesting. We've got the sunroof on our 06LX and have never had a single problem out of it. The only TSB I've ever seen on the sunroofs is the reset procedure (if power is ever removed/battery disconnected) if it acts up.

Hard to say when it pops.. get in the car, push the button and nothing! One time he put the roof to tilt.. popped and was stuck open.

Dealer Update--- they called my house today (Father in Law stayed over for drinks and football last night... hehe)

Anyway, they called and said they were going to replace the roof motor, they did not indicate if they had found a problem.. the saga continues!!

Latest Update.. dealer replaced the motor and it was working fine. While I was programming his XM Radio last night, we noticed that the interior light was flickering and not putting out much light.. I figured a loose bulb as I assumed this is where they get access to the sunroof motor

He parked the car in his garage overnight, went outside this morning, opened the drivers door and lo and behold the light is back to it's full illumination... and the roof doesn't work again!!!!

Think we have have found the problem. As I mentioned above, when they put the new motor in the roof, the lights in the headliner were acting up.
There are 2 switches... one to set the interior light to come on when the door opens (this was the one that was dim and flickering since the motor was replaced) and the other to turn the light on in the interior when the door is closed.

If you leave both lights off, the roof is fine. If you set the light to come on when the door opens, the fuse blows. 3 new fuses were used to test the theory.

We're hoping that a new interior light unit will fix the problem, if not Lord only knows where the wiring issue could be found!

AH!!!! I love a wiring challange. It sound as though there could be a problem with the wiring for the light coming in contact with the mechanism for the sun roof. Since the wires are hot going to the light, that would explain the fuse blowing when turning on the sun roof, or the wires running to the sun roof are grounding out. Well let me rethink that ????????????? The wiring to the light is probably not the problem since the fuse to the light is not blowing, unless the light and the sunroof are on the same fuse. Does the light still work when the sunroof fuse blows???. If it does, than the problem is in the wiring to the sunroof switch. Somewhere up there it is coming in contact with the sunroof mechanisim causing a short when pushing the power button.

Issue solved.. we hope!!!

Dealer pulled out the interior lights.. looked around and nothing... they were ready pull the headlined and then the tech/mechanic saw a small nick in a wire in the light unit... replaced the unit and poof.. no more blowing of fuses on the roof so far!!!
