QUOTE(MABuch131 @ Aug 18 2008, 01:48 PM) Depends on how you drive... highway vs city and braking hard vs coasting... Many variables, no one answer is correct. If in doubt, have them checked.
Exactly!

QUOTE(terkar @ Aug 18 2008, 12:35 PM) Has anyone replaced their brake pads yet? I have 44,000 miles on the gl and everything seems OK. Also I'm still on the original tires but they look like maybe another 5,000 miles or so and the fronts will have to be replaced.
I am also going to replace mine (and rotors) in the next couple weeks. I have 45k miles on it (19k miles since i purchased the car - all highway miles, but dont know how the previous owner drove it).. havent heard the grinding yet, but not far off im sure... once i replace, given all highway for me, they will most likely last another 50k miles....

Well this sucks.....
I have a 2007 Sonata GLS, 17500 miles on it, less than a year old.....and it needs a complete brake job which my dealer says I have to pay for, even though I have the Certified Custom Gold Supplamental Coverage. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks in advance.

That is a glorified way of saying, "You got shafted." As for needing a complete brake job so early on, one can only speculate. Brake wear varies with almost every variable imaginable, so it could be any number of reasons. If you do mostly stop-and-go driving and a lot of hard braking, that's likely the culprit. If not, who knows. If it's a dealer recommending (and performing) the brake service, maybe you need a second opinion. If they are actually shot, try having the dealer look for any kind of underlying problem while they've got everything apart. Perhaps then it will be a warranty item. Good luck.

Today, I've been shopping around several mechanics in town to get a quote for front brake pad replacement for my 06 V6 GLS.
Firestone : $119.xx more Goodyear : $190 Midas : starting from $140
Eventually, I've ordered brake pad from rockauto.com
2006 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS 3.3L 3342cc V6 FI (F) RAYBESTOS PGD924C (PG-D924C) Brake Pad - Front $ 36.79 Shipping $ 7.52 Order Total $ 44.31
and I might find a local mechanic shop or person and get it replaced.(I haven't done this kind of thing yet)
I heard from my colleague that he knows one guy who can do it and his job is ok and reasonable charge. And I also found a small local mechanic which is also known inexpensive and open even on Sunday.
I'll let you know how did it go after it's done.

yea i would get a second opinion on that.. dealer told me he could the brakes and rotors but the still had some life left on them.. lil did he know i just replaced them so im not sure what he meant by a lil life.. more like all the life.. **** stealerships. the dealer wanted to charger 460 bucks.. so some of the prices i see list seem reasonable.. BTW: its so easy to do yourself esp with the instructions i found in this forum.

I took my 2006 V6 GLS(47000 miles on it) to Brake Check to get it checked. Brake inspection was free. They took wheel and caliper and pad off and inspected carefully and visually. They are very nice and kind and it's was very impressive.
It turned out that in front right wheel, we found uneven pad wear. Outside pad is thinner than inside one. But, it is not worn out yet and can still go more.
Anyway,
They recommended me 'brake pad replacement', 'caliper rebuild', 'brake oil change' and it will cost $250 total. I said "I'll think about it' and drove out.
They said because of uneven pad wear, 'caliper rebuild' is necessary. However, I'm thinking that originally caliper is not placed correctly(evenly) so it couldn't apply same amount of force to push pad inside and outside and it is eventually causing 'uneven pad wear'. I'm not a mechanic at all. just opinion.
I'm wondering dealer also provide free brake inspection or not. I might need to call them and find out.

Wow, I'm the bearer of everybody's bad news today. That line is a BS SCAM that those major chains use. Wanna know how I know? I heard the EXACT same thing from them about three years ago (with a different car). It went a little something like this. Sales pitch (radio, tv, and print): "Four wheel friction reline for just $99.88 in most cases" (except all cases). BS Salesman: "The $99.88 price is only for cars that we stock the pads and shoes. We don't stock your rear brakes, so it will be $149.88 for the standard service."
Me: "Oh, you don't stock the rears. How long will it take for them to come in?"
BS Salesman: "We have them here, so you'll be ready in about an hour."
Me: "So you have the rear brakes in stock? That means it'll only be $99.88, right?"
BS Salesman: "No, we don't stock those. It's $149.88."I stopped arguing at this point because I'm just too dam lazy to do them myself. I walked around a nearby shopping center while they worked on the car. Upon return: BS Salesman: "Let's take a look at your brakes. See how the inside and outside pads are a different thickness? That's because your calipers are sticking and they need to be rebuilt. We can do that in about an hour. It'll be $650.00 total."
Me: "May I see the brand new pads you'll be putting on my car?"
BS Salesman: "Sure."
Me: "Do you notice how they're a different thickness, just like what's on the car now? You're a f*cking m0ron..."The conversation got a little too rough to finish out here, but I basically told him where to stick his sticking calipers and left. BTW, I have not yet looked closely at the Sonata's brake pads to know if they are the same thickness while they're new. Perhaps someone who's done the replacement (or at least seen new pads) can chime in here. Either way, good luck with your brake job.
