So do any other Hyundai dealers add these "market adjustments" to the MSRP? This picture happens to come from my local dealer (name withheld to protect the guilty). They also own Nissa, Mazda, and a Mitsubishi dealers, all of which do this market adjustment BS. Most adjustments were $999 (even for a big-a$$ gas guzzling V8 Nissan SUV), but the Nissan Versa was rockin' a $1499 adjustment. I haven't been back to the Hyundai dealer to see if they did the same to the Hyundai Elantra and/or Accent.

According to this definition it's a reasonable this to do on rare or extremely high demand vehicles. I could see this being done on some hybrid models or a fancy-pants sports car, but not the above mentioned makers/models.

Anyone else seen these on Hyundais or other brands? I think it's another tactic by these dealers to stiff the everyday Joe buying a car without doing the proper research (over half the car buying public, maybe?).

Discuss.

Scott

All Dealers participate in some sort of Market Adjustment(s). Many

Car buyers will pay MSRP plus. Look what I paid, minus my $8000 Discount.

This is not the Soviet Union, this is the land of the free, and any merchant can try charging any potential customer whatever he wishes.

Problem is, for every educated, smart, suspicious customer like us, there are probably 2, if not 3 nice, honest, gullible customers who'd pay the MSRP, plus all the extra charges and add-ons the dealer would charge or offer. You and I are gona drive car dealers to benkraptcy. The nice guys are the ones who save them from that.

Lucky there are some of those, 'cause only thanks to them a car dealer can afford selling a car at cost, or very close to cost. They'd still try making money on offering us those $500 oil changes, called periodical maintenance services.

My local dealers have no type of market adjustment or markup. I would never pay a premium for a car, no matter what car it is.

Ladies and Gentlemen this is what is commonly known as "additional dealer mark-up". Disguised as market adjustment. They might as well call it "hey we need more money mark-up" or "here's some money we can take off mark-up".

When I was visiting a friend at the local Hyundai dealer and drooling over the highly overpriced Genesis they had this ADMU posted on their sticker. WTF

If I ever decide to buy a "brand new" Sonata I'll go in with my Sharpie and mark this out before I take a test drive. Can't wait to seee what happens then.

Another innovative idea, charges that suddenly show up on the invoice, as if they're known, common charges.... This from today's Chicago Tribune, a reader is complaining:

"While shopping for a new Mazda, the salesperson showed me the invoice with a line for "Chicago Assessment" and another for "Warranty Retail Parts Recovery." Together they totaled $282. He says that everyone pays these fees."

They would be a lot more honest to call it "owner's wife wants a diamond ring for her coming birthday, needs your help!" :gitara:

That paint sealant package is basically another dealer markup too.

I know my dealer has an "addendum" sticker. The "appearance package" is on that for $1,499. I think it includes pin stripes, door edge molding, and maybe mud guards. Basically $50 worth of supplies. Pretty much all dealers in the area have this. All it takes is for one to raise their voice slightly and say they're not paying $1,499 for $50 worth of supplies and the dealership will very quickly take that off.

I actually went to the dealership on Saturday and they had one Genesis out front. Well in addition to the $1,500 appearance package, they also hand wrote in a $2,500 market adjustment. Gee I don't think you'll ever see me paying a $4,000 premium for a Hyundai. But good luck to the person stupid enough too, or so impatient to pay that premium. :whistling:

In my 'Package' that I listed above I was supposed to get Door Edge Guards &

a full Detail, along with Paint Sealant. I got a hosing instead. :P

I did get the Pinstripes which are hand painted and not those terrible foil ones. I

also got a full tank of Gas too. All that was $1300. But when it came down to it,

none of those items really cost me a cent. Why they didn't even try to include

the Scotchguard protection that is sold from Coast to Coast!

Apparently these other dealers are at least trying to hide their outrageous markups with the inexpensive pin strips, splash guards, etc. I'm just really surprised my local dealer is so out in the open about it. I'm guessing no one put up a big enough stink about it. It just makes me think even less of the dealer when they do this... they're already making a lot of money if they sell the car at or near MSRP. I can definitely see why people hate the car buying experience.

My dealer has a $5995. dealer adjustment and after taking a test drive I told them it is out and out gouging. They will try if they sense that there is interest in the Genesis and not enough cars to go around. Tune in next year when the rebates will appear. See how successful they have been selling the Azera, Veracruz and Entourage. Lousy marketing and poor showroom ambiance will doom their attempt to entice the average BMW or Lexus owner into the store, unless they are car buffs and not into badge snobbery. Meanwhile I will continue to enjoy my Azera and Sonata.

The dealership I work for has Hyundai,Ford, Kia and Suzuki. All of them except Ford's get an added $1,295 for a pinstripe and door and wheel molding.

Let's say they are going to give you $1,800 off the price they are really giving you $500 off. No one pays MSRP for a Hyundai and anyone who pays for the those dealer markups is blind.

Even my dealer - and mine is one of the good ones - (see I love my dealer posting elsewhere) will try to add low cost - high margin "things" to their cars. Mine had security etching for only $395.00 (really a theft insurance policy) and $400.00 nitrogen fill with a "lifetime" tire warranty (another insurance policy). In addition they had put wheel locks on my steel wheels(the ones with plastic hubcaps - or are they now called fascia's).

Guess what, I have etched windows, wheel locks and nitrogen in my tires at no additional cost. Just tell them to take if off, or take off and these charges disappear. It costs them more to remove (or in the case of glass etching impossible) than it does to leave them on a give them free.

They make incredible MU's on accessories and install charges and if you don't weaken you can either get your stuff at reasonable price or do it aftermarket.

I really don't blame them, just don't expect them to give their cars away folks - otherwise you won't have anyone to complain about. Service - sales, etc.

They will be out of business!

The original question was something like "do all dealers charge this"...the short answer is no...and the more dealers you check, the more obvious it is...I ran into it about a month ago when i started checking around for my new ELANTRA SE...theres only one HYNDAI dealer in town, and he added the $995 to the msrp, basically just because he could, and alotta folks probably paid it...The next closest dealer was 40 miles away, and didnt have any ELANTRA SE's and wasnt gonna try to find one either...After that, it was 90 miles away (service issues eh?), but the first question I asked on the phone was did they add a "market adjustment"...his short answer was no, they make up for it in volume etc etc.being a bit suspicious (yer dealing with car salesmen after all...I drove over there and wandered around the lot before I indicated any real interest in the car I wanted..no added charges...none at all!.I was armed with the Consumers Reports Car Price Report (best $14 I spent in along time), and after a lil bit I bought a loaded SE, complete with moonroof AND Leather for 17,900..this was all just 2 weeks ago....I think I did just fine...to the posters who believe that people who pay it need ANAL lube...you got it exactly right...hot car my ****...I dont need to make dealers day all by myself...theyre greedy enough and a gullible, uninformed buyer just makes it easier..

Salesmen always waste your time. Never pay a dealer market adjustment.

Request a email quote from the dealers on the car you want. The dealers that never respond or fail to quote are tossed out. Once your get a quote take it to the competition and ask them to beat the price. You will sleep better at night knowing that you got the best price.

My dealer does not have any adjustments on his cars. They did add pin striping on my '07 Sonata Limited and I said I did not order it so I will not take the car, sales person said we do that to all the cars and it is only $115.00 and I said no thanks and started to walk away so the dealer ate that $115.00
