Ram air takes hot air from the engine bay and uses it. a cold air intake takes cold air from the outside. I need to talk to

From what I read and understand.. The ones that have the intakes like I do have ram air. If we want a really CAI we need to run the pipe down to just before the filter leaves the engine bay. We need to somehow shield it from rocks ect. Also adding in a $50 bypass valve so that water doesn't hydro lock your engine and KILL it would be adviseable..

If "we" can do this we will have a real Cold Air Intake. I'm going to be messing with mine for about a month to see what I can come up with.

I just found a picture: LOOK please

It's for a tib but look at the little nipple for the breather. I know we have breather filters but what about that. That's an AEM... Am I missing something here?

Ok first off if you have SRI like everyone else pretty much it's not ram air. Ram air is when you have like a hood scoop directing air to your filter. What most of us have is a Short Air Intake.

Short Air Intake : Takes air from engine bay.
RAM Air Intake : Gets air from outside via Scoop. Not much in the way of piping. You see this mostly of classic muscle cars.
Cold Air Intake : Long tube to get air from lower part of bumper. ALmost like ram air.

The best bet for your application would be to take your SRI and if your filter has the front filter hole attach a pipe to that and run it for cold air. THat way you will be running both SRI and Cold Air Intake. Great for lowend and top end. To get true Ram Air you'll need to make a hood scoop and direct the air to the filter and place the filter pretty much right on the throttle body like I did.

Thanks for clearing up the common misconceptions, komptek.

If you want to see real RAM AIR look at a GTO Judge circa 1969 or so. :P What you guys are calling "ram air" is only sucking in hot air out if the engine bay. Very far from the real thing. :whistling:

thank you komp for doing what i was about to.

and, the best way to get cold air straight down begind the motor and trans. fastest route, no rocks and very little moisture during rain. and you can make an aluminum scoop that dips down so you can grab the fresh air from under the car

BTW, did anyone take off the rubber tingy on the hood that seals out air? or would that do absolutly nothing for our cars?

Komptek is right ,the combo setup is best for our size engines. No worry about hydrolock, and our engines have proven to be more responsive to the SRI.The true CAI does not have near as good throttle response due to the length of the column of air that has to be put in motion when the throttle is opened .The SRI would allow the air to be brought in quickly for throttle response ,while the CAI would start to pull in cooler air for more density .The combo would easily supply enough airflow for top end while leaving bottom end torque and having a longer ,flatter torque curve through midrange.
Hoosiers too is right on the JUDGE as well as the cowl inducted raim -air Bandit TransAm w/shaker hood (1975-1978).

I think for our cars to have a hood scoop we need to have the scoop on the inside with mesh so that you don't have ugly bumby hood scoops sticking out. Our cars are too little for that and would imo look fugly

I was reading the wiki for CAI and ram air. I do know what true ram air is I have a transam.

i was thinking about routing the intake in behind the engine in that large opening down there...i might work on that this weekend..ill post something if i figure it out :D

as for the rubber seal, i believe thats there to keep rain out :P...so obviously then itd be preventing cold air from coming in...so that might be a worth while investigation ;)

Don't put the intake down behind the motor. There isn't any way to get cold air down there. You need to cool air. Channel it from the front of the motor.
