Hi giys as promissed I would present test results as soon as available over longer distances

tucson CRDI Total 22118 km
total during test 21081 km
used petrol 2047

makes it 1 litre per 10.3 km

which is 29.1 MPG UK Canada and 24.23 MPG US

these results come from having a lot of different drivers take it for a spin or holiday, on average they probably drove it a bit faster than they would do with their own car as the car magazine pays for the gas/petrol.

Indeed the result is not as good as presented in the catalog where it states that on average it should do 1 litre per 14,3 km

well for what it is worth , hope you appreciate the update

Thank you for the figures, if I get 29.1/24.23 mpg overall I'll be reasonably happy! The Canadian 2005 EnerGuide figures for the Tucson V6 AWD are 23 city/32 highway mpg; we can't get the diesel in Canada :)

Those figures aren't to bad for a diesel. I traded in my 3.0ltr Nissan Patrol for a Tucson. No diesel version available in Australia. Over 3 years and 80.000km in the Patrol I averaged just over 12ltr/100km , about 23.54mpg (Imperial). different vehicles I know - I think many Tucson CRDI buyers are expecting fuel consumption figures similar to vehicles like the diesel VW Golf. It aint going to happen because the Tucson is a heavy vehicle.

If I owned a diesel Tucson and got those figures i'd been pretty happy. With one careful driver you could quite easly improve that consumption figure.

Hi Crowie,

Well - yes, us new Tucson owners ARE expecting those sort of MPG figures because that is what Hyundai said to expect in their literature (39.2 MPG Combined Urban/Extra Urban, 47MPG Extra Urban)! As a new purchaser and without any previous experience of a 4x4 you tend to trust the figures quoted in the brochure, especially as they were supposed to be evaluated by an independent authority.

Also everyone talks about the Tucson being a heavy vehicle, but I don't think it is as large/heavy as some 4x4's.

Jim

A weekend drive in my new Tucson V6 all wheel drive has yeilded an average of 12.1 L/100km. I drove a distance of 984 kilometres and used 118.8 Litres of fuel. I drove at the speed limit of 100 km/hr in one direction and 120 km/hr the other direction with no noticeable difference in fuel consumption. This is far below the figures released by Transport Canada and Hyundai for this vehicle which were 8.8 L/100 km highway and 11.3 L/100 km City.

I realize that I was driving under winter conditions (cold weather -10 C) but I would have expected to have achieved at least or better than 11.3 L/100km.

For such a small light SUV this is unexceptable. Vehicles that are much larger with V8 engines are getting much better fuel mileage In Canada. For example I have a Ford areostar van with a 4.0 L engine AWD that gets over 32 miles per gallon or 8.8 L/100km. This is a 7 passenger vehicle and is much heavier.

Regardin driving in cold weather.

This is not per se a reason for high consumption, actually it is quite the oppositte

let me explain, cold wheather does make a car consume more on short distances as it takes more time to get the engine on operating temperature.

But once it is on the right operating temperature cold weather actually does the same as an Intercooler. it enhances power and reduces feul cosumption.

A test with a VW golf with diesel engine showed that at sea level with minus 5 degrees C as a reference the same engine at 30 degrees ( summer) at 2000 meters above sea level showe a decrease of 50% !!!!! of power.

Cold air is thicker, and thus has more oxigen per cubieke meter and this helps burning the petrol much better.

saving petrol and improving power!

Just to let you know !

Scorpio, are you trying to say that a vehicule gets better fuel consumption in winter than in summer ? Give me a break !!
Yes, I agree that cold air is denser than warm air and combustion should be more efficient, but that same engine has to overcome the effect of increased friction in the lubricants of the transmission, axels, wheel bearings and all of the engine accessories. Not to mention the effects of any snow or slush the tires have to be pushed through. Our  2.7 AWD Tucson returns an average of 28.5 mpg ( imperial ) or approx. 10.6 L/ 100kms on 90 % highway driving during the summer. In winter this would fall to around 23 mpg. At minus 35 degrees the drive mechanism is so cold that I don't have to break at the end of my street.... !!
All to say that I love my wife's Tucson ( and my wife ofcourse ) and although it gets only FOUR mpg better than my Toyota Tundra 4.7 V8, its a very nice little cross over vehicule.

off course fricion increases but once everthing is at operating temp the effect should kick in.

The test result was clear enough
