QUOTE(SPOOKGT @ Aug 8 2008, 07:07 PM) I have used it for years. Every 3,000 miles with a new filter. Also i use Wal-Mart Full Synthetic (only $15.00 for 5 qt jug) My father read a Motor Week oil study last year. And Wal-Mart Synthetic scored in the top 3 right behind Mobil One.
Was considering synthetic but didn't want to pay the price every 8000kms. You've just convinced me. That's right, I said 8000, not 5000. Screw that.

I use Mobil 1 5/30 with a Mobil 1 filter in my wife's 2.4L and change every 6,000 miles. I also run Mobil 1 5/20 with a Mobil 1 filter on my V8 Dakota and I wouldn't use anything else.
You can't go wrong with it and you can't beat the 5 quart jug at Wal-Mart either.

I guess this is as good of an oil thread to wake up as any!
I have an `08 Sonata 4-cyl that's approaching 40k miles. I bought it with 36k on it and I don't know if it ever had synthetic oil. I would like to switch it over to Mobil 1, but I'm not sure which version to use. I went on the website and it told me to switch to 0W20. I live in TX and it gets HOT here in the summer. I think that 5W30 or 10W30 might be better due to the heat. Does anyone have a suggestion on which oil I should use?

QUOTE (faisalmg @ Sep 10 2008, 10:45 AM) Guyz, is it true that once you switch to synthetic, you gotta stick with it? Not true at all. You can go back and forth from dino to syn a dozen tiems, and it won't hurt. Syn won't help you either (unless you are in severely cold climes or intend to put >250,000 miles on your engine.)

QUOTE (faisalmg @ Sep 10 2008, 10:45 AM) Guyz, is it true that once you switch to synthetic, you gotta stick with it? No. Oil is oil. There is no magic to synthetic. I like what the previous post said about dino vs. synthetic. In my opinion, if you are going to change your oil every 3000 miles, dino is perfectly fine. What dino fails at is retaining the lubrication property for extended drain intervals. Depending on the severety of usage, your 5w-20 dino can revert back to 5w-10 or 5w-5 when the viscosity modifier breaks down. Synthetic on the hand has the advantage of being engineered to have the multi-weight property. So it resists the breakdown a lot better. Therefore when used in 5K, 7K, or even 10K changing intervals, some still show good results. (BTW, as a side note, your oil may last 10K but your oil filter will not. So if you are doing a long changing interval, I would still replace the oil filter every 3 to 4 thousand miles. Then top off the oil as you will lose some when doing this). For me, because I believe in changing your oil filter every 3000 miles, I choose to change my oil at the same time. I've been using the motorcraft syn-blend from walmart cuz it is the cheapest 5w-20 I can find AND it has very good reputation from used oil analysis.

QUOTE (CMac @ Sep 18 2008, 08:39 PM) I prefer synthetic oil mostly because it is man made. It doesn't require us to support an arab country to use it. Unfortunately it is also made of crude oil... it is just more refined.

This is a thorny subject. Synthetic or not synthetic, full synthetic or synthetic blend, switching back & forth between them. It's all so confusing.
I haven't used synthetics due to the cost. The arguments against it are that the oil still gets contaminated and has to be changed as often as non-synthetic. So from a cost standpoint I can't see the benefit. Note that on cars with maintenance contracts as part of the purchase price, like BMWs etc, the dealers are required to use full synthetics & the oil change intervals are 12 mo/15K mi during the maintenance contract. AFTER the maintenance contract the oil change intervals to maintain warranty protection drop to 3 mo/3K mi but still require full synthetics. Go figure.
But from a long term perspective I may be changing my tune. I've had to repair valve train components on several of my cars at over 120K mi. Yes I tend to keep my cars way too long. I change oil regularly (3 mo/3K mi) using quality name brand oil & filters. They're not cheap but not as expensive as full synthetics. On all of the cars I've had to perform surgery on the engines show signs of oil residue (aka "sludge") on rocker arms, push rods, valve springs, intake manifolds, oil galley, etc. So I know the residue is throughout the engine. This is a natural result of thermal cycling in the engine. There is NO way to prevent it using non-synthetics.
The arguments for synthetics is that no residue forms because the synthetic oils have a higher boiling point. No vapors form & therefore no residue (aka "sludge") occurs. I don't know this 1st hand, this is simply the argument. But based on my experiences in tearing apart the top of several of my own engines I'm willing to consider switching.
For me to switch a car must be valuable enough. I don't consider the Sonata a worthy contender. It's only a low-budget family sedan, nothing special. I can't see spending considerably more money to maintain a car that I won't keep long enough to need a valve train replacement.
Good Luck.

My Santa Fe ran dino oil up until 50,000 miles at which point I began to get the urge to turn my own wrenches. I have been changing my oil ever since. I started out using Texaco Havoline 10W30 full-synthetic which the Santa Fe's V6 just loved. No noisy lifters on cold start, smooth as silk, the car just loved that stuff. Then in January of this year, the only local chain in my area to carry Havoline oil closed down no thanks to Wells Fargo refusing to give them a loan extension. Never mind that WF got bailout money to keep LOANING to BUSINESS to keep them afloat! Sorry...it just peeves me to no end. I looked desperately at every other auto parts store in my area and nobody had even heard of the Texaco Havoline so I reluctantly switched to Mobil1. The Santa Fe doesn't seem to mind it but we sure do miss our Havoline. (IMG: style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) I'm running a 5,000-mile change interval with a Hyundai OEM filter ($5 can't be beat). I experimented with a 7,500 mile drain interval but the car didn't like it one bit. At around 6,800 miles in I began experiencing increasingly poor fuel economy, rough running and harsh starts. I couldn't imagine driving it another 700 miles like that so I changed the oil and all went right with the world so it's been every 5,000 miles ever since. I think every 3,000 miles is just too frequent, especially so with synthetic. I had the dealership give my engine a check up when I took it in for the 120k service back in May (I'm at 130k now) and they said it's solid as a rock. No sludge buildup, she's healthy as a horse and still runs like day one. I'm sold on synthetic.

Synthetic, Synthetic blend and Conventional motor oil is a HUGE debate topic that is spiced with extra oil additives question.
Synthetic should be used in high performance engines or engines that have very high compression and heat inside. Synthetic brakes down later and can hold contaminants longer time thus oil change intervals are longer but not the filter change intervals! There are engines that like synthetic and there are engines that will not get any benefit from it! If you want to use synthetic start doing it early but before 35.000 miles to get benefit from it. Synthetic gives better friction and less stress to engine and can stand more heat thus your engine gets longer life and almost no performance decline in time and miles!
If you have more than 75.000+ miles I would not change to synthetic blindly. Your engine parts are more ore less already worn so the thinner synthetic can go through on somewhat worn seals. Some people say synthetic makes oil leaks! It is not true! The thinner oil gets/can get through imperfect seals so the oil does not damage anything! You may start using synthetic blend at this stage if you want.
If you have 100.000+ miles and still use conventional stay with that. You can get heavier oil that helps reduce blow by and increase compression but stay on conventional oil.
If you keep changing your oil+filter every 3months/3000 miles whichever comes first it provides very good treatment to your engine!!!!
As far as oil additives concerned they are thought to be "snake oils". It is true in general but there are two brands that really work!! BG that is quite pricey but does excellent job (Quick clean, RF-7, MOA, fuel system cleaner) Lucas that is much cheaper and does good job. Not that effective as the BG but still okay. (Injector cleaner, oil stabilizator, transmission fix)
Note: Every engine is different. BG and Lucas worked for me and for many other people but I know some people who said it had not worked however most people experienced positive things.
Good oil brands: Valvoline, Mobil, Castrol. Superior brand: Royal Purple, AMSoil.
Avoid using Quaker state, Pennzoil, Q-tech, Walmart brand,
