I have considered switching pretty to synthetic for my next oilchange (or the next), so I'm just wondering how many people here have done so. I know my grandfather swears by it. I forget exactly why they had the head off of his Grand Prix, but he's been using it since he got it new in 1999 and he said the rocker arms looked brand new. No buildup or anything, they just looked wet.

I run mobil1 synthetic in all my vehicles. Others will probably recommend Amsoil or Royal Purple.

I did the same thing. When I bought my 06 Sonata I immediately had them change the oil to full synthetic.

First oil change was dino.

All succeeding changes were Mobil 1 5W-20.

Do it with confidence and enjoy the peace of mind that synthetics, when properly applied give you.

Same here - have been using Mobil One since its inception in 1975 - except I do the service work myself - so I know what goes in the engine.

One more thread on the subject won't hurt - maybe get some fresh insight on the subject - although not likely - it's been beat to death (and stomped on).

still using Dino oil with 45k on the car, not a single problem yet (knock on wood)... get it changed in between 4,000 - 5,000 miles and it comes out clean each time (then again, im all highway driving)

Using Dino oil here, too...mostly stop and go driving. I change every 3,000 miles, which was drilled into me...wrong or right, 30 years ago.

i used to try to get it as close to 3k as i could, but soon learned that with highway driving, the car is much more forgiving for longer time intervals... i think i could actually push it to 6k without any issues, but i dont want to.. (unless i switch to Synth, which I may do once it gets over 50k miles - then i might go to 7,500 - 8,000 miles or so)

Synthetic all the way. Whe I bought my Caravan I started using Synthetic oil. I did the 9k oil and filter change. When I was going to trow the oil filter away I notice that it didn't have the rubber seal, so I knew I installed the new filter with 2 seals. Been the lazy **** I'm, I just tigthen the filter a little more, well next day my wife call me" The oil ligth is on and I'm at a ligth and smoke is comming out" I told her to park and shut off the engine. I knew what was going on, and I tought I screw the engine up, but thanks to the synthetic oil the engine was fine. I bought more oil and a new filter and went to where she was did the oil change thing again. The engine had NO oil at all, was bonedry. The Minivan engine perform greatly for another 80k miles, until an old women hit and totaled. My mechanic always told me that my engine was in very good condition. So yes, go with synthetic. You will be glad you did.

I have used it for years. Every 3,000 miles with a new filter. Also i use Wal-Mart Full Synthetic (only $15.00 for 5 qt jug) My father read a Motor Week oil study last year. And Wal-Mart Synthetic scored in the top 3 right behind Mobil One.

I didn't even know Walmart had their own brand of oil. Very interesting!

What I like about Walmart is the 5 quart jugs - whatever you use -

Makes it easy to fill the engine - and you get a free jug to hold the old oil.

The folks who work at Blackstone Labs probably know more about the condition of "used" oil than anyone around. And, according to Blackstone, there is NO advantage of using "Oil A" over "Oil B". Any API SM/GF-4 approved oil will fully protect a gasoline engine over a typical 3,000 mile or 5,000 mile change interval.

Blackstone went on to say that most of their staff, after becoming experts on motor oil, prefer to use conventional motor oil.

And, reading Blackstone reports, the reasons why are clear. Any API SM/GF-4 approved oil performs at a high level over a 5,000 mile change interval. And, any oil, no matter how expensive, is showing signs of contamination by 10,000 miles or 12,000 miles.

So, using conventional "cheap" oil and changing every 5,000 miles protects the engine as well, or better, than using expensive synthetic oil and changing every 10,000 miles. Yesterday, at Target, conventional oil was $2 a quart, and synthetic was $6 a quart...two changes with conventional oil costs less than one change with synthetic oil.

But, if I had to start my car at twenty below zero, or pull a trailer across Death Valley in August, I'd go with synthetic. Under those extreme temperatures, a synthetic oil provides a little bit of extra protection, and those are conditions were extra protection is essential.
