Alright, im submitting this from my phone so we'll see how well this works out...but anyway. So its time for me to get new oil for my santa fe and im in a toss up between what would be better for the truck, the 5w-30 or the 10w-30. And im probably going to go with the Royal Purple Synthetic, so if you guys could help me out....

well I am not too familiar with the two grades of oil but I heard that royal purple is good for high heat or stress on the motor. for example towing and hauling alot in extreme temps, I dunno if this is true or not.. and I know about the two grades one is alittle thicker then the other.. so so you want something thats thin enough for the cold and thicker for the summer.. but if you live in a mixed climate with hot and cold best to pick one that does good for both.. don't take my word for it I could be wrong about all this.. but thats just my guess at the question best to ask a professional or someone who knows alot more about motor oils. good luck ////AlpineSantaFe01

Somewhere in the owner's manual there is a chart for what grade to use depending on the temperatures your car sees. Since it occasionally gets over 100 here in Portland, I use 10W30, full-synthetic Texaco Havoline. Great stuff; no problems.

I use 10W-30 synthetic. I just changed to synthetic a few months ago and saw my MPG go up to 22 MPG with an even split of highway/city driving. I'm driving a 2004 V6.

royal purple is a great choice. ive had no problems with using it although it is more expensive at first it will last up to 3 times as long, all youve gotta change is the filter. i had an 03 dodge ram 3.7 V6 that drove ok, i replaced the engine oil and it seemed to run a bit smoother. it was when i changed the transmission fluid over to RP that i noticed a real diffrence, smoother shifts, quicker acceleration. when i have the time and money im going to put it in my 05 santa fe V6. if i drive halfway decent, i average 20 to 22 miles a gallon. im sold on the stuff. as for 5W or 10W, the 5 is just a bit thinner than the 10 at cold temps. i dont think your going to notice a difference at all at normal driving.

What MPG were you acheiving prior to shifting to synthetic oil?

 Man that was a long time and many miles ago. I switched in November, 2006 right around the same time the idiots made 10% ethanol blended gasoline mandatory in Oregon. So I didn't see that much of an increase. I think I went from averaging 18.5 to getting 19.5 to 20. Not drastic but a change never the less.

However....I will frequently go up to Washington for my gas as they use a less-than-10% ethanol blend and I consistently get better mileage on WA gasoline; I usually average 22 mpg on a mixed Washington tank.

Also, I drove through Utah in June and they do not use ethanol there at all. I got 26 mpg on almost all-highway (did putt around SLC for a bit).

I'm sure that's more than you were bargaining for but there it is. :whistling:

how much does the royal purple tranny fluid cost? im a poor kid so hopefully not too much, but then again out in the chicago suburbs the royal purple full synthetic runs about 8 bucks a quart, so with a 4.5qt capacity that kinda sucks, but i want to take care of my truck as long as i got it. And yea ill probably go with the 5w seeing as summer is coming to a close and the wonderful cold chicago temperatures will be coming back in full swing soon...

For those considering the Royal Purple transmission fluid, I will warn you. There have been instances of people using tranny fluid other than what Hyundai specifies to awful results not to mention a voided warranty. If you are a little short on money, the last thing you need is the bill for a replacement transmission. I'm not preaching, just warning you.

alright now im confused. so i check the owners manual to see what oil it suggests. it breaks it down into temperature categories. what would the chicago suburbs fall into? hot, normal, or cold? even for normal it suggests 10w-40 so yea...im not 100% sure anymore...

Hey kid, just toss a coin, heads 5-30, tails 10-30. It doesn't matter that much. Neither does brand, contrary to popular belief, they are all basically the same. For the last 170,000mi I've used super-tec from wal-mart. Oil change intervals have varied, anywhere from 4000 to 6000 mi. Veh runs 100 mi a day, 6 days a week. If I was living in town I'd probably try to change it a little sooner.
