Hi to all.
I have a Hyundai Atos Prime (2002 Model). Never had any problems with it since I bought it. Now i have noticed that when i shift into reverse the gear sometimes grindes. This happens even on starting the car after being parked for some time. To avoid this grinding noise i first shift in Ist gear and then into reverse. It seems Ok then but since this noise has started just recently I am thinking that there is something wrong.
All ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to all.

this is caused by either the engine is ticking over too fast when you select reverse or the clutch is not fully releasing, so first off is the idle speed to high?

Hi - thanks for your prompt reply.

The idle speed is ok. When you say that the clutch is not fully released do you mean I have to set the clutch pedal. I tried checking that out at the engine end. If so. How do I go about it since there is a stud preventing the nut from turning.
Refer to attachment.
Thanks again

Hi,

I have the same problem with my Hyundai Accent. Had the clutch replaced and now reverse is very hard to find, except in a few instances where it will slip in no problems. I dont know what the problem is, but I find if I first move into fifth gear, back into neutral, release and repress clutch, then select reverse, I can find reverse every time. Bizarre - but it works.

Hello
If your car has a manual transmission, you may have noticed that every time you drive in reverse, especially if you gain a little speed, you can hear the transmission whining about it. Sometimes people think there's something wrong with the transmission, and bring their car to the shop. I can save you the trip, all cars with manual transmission whine in reverse, some more than others.

Your next question, of course: Why? I've heard a number of interesting explanations over the years, but the real answer is in the gears. Specifically the way the teeth in the reverse gear are shaped. The forward gears in your transmission are helical shaped, meaning the individual teeth on the gear are curved rather than straight (see photo) but reverse has straight cut teeth.
