Hi Folks,

I've been wondering if anyone here has any experience with the Hankook tires that came on my Sonata? Are they considered noisy and stiffer than your average passenger tire?
I am trying to find out how much of a difference another brand of tire will actually make in the ride and road noise I am experiencing.

Also for those of you who have tried any kind of noise reduction on their cars, what modification seems to have made the biggest difference ?

Thanks,
Frank

i am under the understanding that the Hankooks OEM's that came with the Sonata are not the best tire in the world. Most OEM tires are not the greatest.. when i looked at Tire Rack, they dont get the best rating....

in terms of noise reduction, you only really have a couple options:

1. replace the tires with ones that are rated for lower noise...
2. sound deadening (Dynamat, etc)

sound deadening, while it represents a nice upgrade for not only the road/cabin noise, but also for the stereo.. however, it is a royal PITA to install (or expensive if you get someone else to do it).

i still have the Michelin OEM's (here in the 'States) and i have 45k miles on them, and they still have "around" half the tread left... (surprisingly).. they dont have wonderful road noise dampening either... when it comes time to replace them, i would deffo want something with better road noise ratings as well (especially on the highway)

The Hankook are sort of decent tires for OEM. Tire noise is one of my irritants and the Hankooks are pretty quite. I have replaced darn near every other OEM tire when I bought previous cars right off the lot for this reason but I can not really complain about the OEMs on my '08. Subjective evaluation at best, but I was surprised that I didnt have issues with them.

The OEM Hankook tires on my '08 Limited are very quiet. They are not stiff tires compared to low profile tires.

As imabiggles suggested, this is very subjective. I don't know much about tires, but the Sonata has never received any complaints about road noise (nor wind noise) from the professionals. Accord, yes, plenty (though getting better in recent generations), but not the Sonata.

I understand subjectivity, I drove the accord and didn't find a lot of difference between it and the sonata, I drove the Camry and found it quieter I also drive my Brothers 05 sebring and find it quieter.
There is no complaint about wind noise, it's extremely quiet in that respect but, on roads that are worn on witch I drive in the grooves the car seems very noisy, if I drive close to the shoulder or close to the center line where the pavement isn't worn as much, the car is much quieter.
I just assumed it was the tires.

Thanks,
Frank

Yesterday I read that the Sonata never had any Transmission issues.

Now I read that the Sonata does not have Road noise from the High

profile Tires. :whistling:

The roads around here aren't the best, I just hoped tires would make an improvement but I guess that's not going to be the case :blownose:

Does anyone who has applied a sound deadener like dynomat remember where it was applied that made the greatest difference ? I don't want to go all crazy and do the whole car.

Thanks

Come on folks!!! :P
I have been more than patient waiting for a reply to my question about where sound deadener made the biggest difference. I know there are some of you who have used stuff like dynomat so how about sharing a little of your experience Please.

Actually this is to bump my own thread

Thanks
Frank

not many of us have put sound deadening in their Sonata's. Dogstar has (i think) for the sound system, but the Sonata is not exactly a loud interior car comparatively...

If properly installed, Dynamat or equivalent can make a huge difference. Driving smooth roads, you won't be able to notice a lot of difference in a Sonata. On rougher road surfaces and higher speeds, the difference can be very significant.

Lining the fender wells usually has the most benefit. Next the trunk, next the doors.

Never personally used it, but a friend's Nissan was like night and day.

Thanks bobad,

when you say put the sound deadener in the fenderwells i assume you ment outside wouldn't that make it more prone to rust?

where in th trunk do you suggest i use it?

Where i live the roads are horrable and any reduction in noise would be appreciated  .

Thanks

I think its because the Accord and Sonata have low profile tires on them, while camry and sebring dont...just a guess

I always found the Sonata super quiet.
But that's coming from a Lexus RX300 with a blown rear right shock and 120k miles..hahah

My friends own everything from Accords to Cherokees and some Passats, Altimas, Sentras etc....

They are all amazed at the Sonata's quiet interior...ESPECIALLY when idling.

They also love how smooth it is on the highway, granted most of their cars are 2-3 years older than my sonata, but I always get props on having a very "comfortable" and "smooth" car... The backseat space gets compliments too.

BTW, the new car comes tommorow : ) picking it up at night so I should have pics up on Thursday

Your profile shows a GLS. My '07 has the plastic wheel covers and they really rattle even when going over small seems in the road. Can I assume you have them, too?

I'll get the tires changed over soon and when the covers are off I'll bend out the spring clips hoping to reduce the rattling.

GEWB

You must have missed my earlier thread :)

MBZ C300 4Matic Sport
w/ Multimedia Package (COMAND, Navi, Logic7 surround sound, voice control, 6-disc MP3)
Premium Package I & II
Panoramic sunroof.
Bluetooth wireless for phone.
Ipod integration.
Tele-aid system.

I have an earlier thread "Leaving the Sonata Community"
That tells what is in all those packages and the unfortunate fate of my Sonata.
I'll also post pics in that thread when I can.

I am excited.

It's not usually a good idea to pick up a car at night. The lack of light makes it difficult to find paint flaws, dents and/or dings. Most dealers (I'm not sure about MB, though) will assume you made the scratch/dent/ding after taking delivery.

My recommendation is to pay very close attention to the car upon delivery, preferably in a well-lit area. Maybe you can bring an LED flashlight with you to make it easier to identify problem areas.

Either way, good luck with the new ride - I'm sure the Sonata will miss you (especially being in the hands of a woman! :w00t: )
