Hey All,
Has anyone had the Hyundai AEM ® Short-ram Intake installed? I have a lot of questions,
1. What is the purpose?

2. How much did it cost installed? I am not very machanically inclined.

3. Will you get better gas milage?

The thread is called Air Intake!. It's on the current page of the 3G thread, and I posted a link to the AEM SRI that has a description there.

As far as what it does I am quoting the description on the Hyundai Accessory Store for the AEM SRI:

"Every ram air intake system features an individually tuned, mandrel-bent aluminum inlet pipe for each specific application. Hyundai has tested many combinations, and tuned the length and diameter of each system to help carry more air into the engine across the RPM range. This translates into more power where you need it. Its a thermal dynamic fact that cooler air is more oxygen dense. Since oxygen is an integral part of the combustion process, the more you bring in, the bigger the explosion in your combustion chamber, and the more power you will make"

You can also look up AEM on any search engine like Yahoo and Google and it will take you to their main page with even more info.

It was super easy to install myself, and I'm a girl! They also send you crayon written directions to install yourself, so you can't screw it up. This will save you 1-200 dollars in labor costs. With the intake costing you as much as $300.00, you should install it yourself.

I have an automatic, and i did not notice any better MPG, although i did notice a better get up and go, and a little more aggressive sound. You didn't search well enough when there is a thread currently on the same page 8 threads below yours, all you had to use was your eyes in this case... No search engine required.

~2mpg better on the highway. (why i bought it.)

sri = warm expanded air intake = better mileage

if you're light on the throttle you won't really hear the sound difference much

if you mash the gas it sounds like your anemic cars' balls have finally dropped - much better

i'm mechanically retarded and have fucked up a lot of things in my short life, but my friend and i were able to install it with ease - it's **** proof, don't pay anyone to do it.

If nothing else, it will give you a meaner sound. Don't expect a huge preformance or mpg gain. Also, as stated above, it's a very easy install.

technically cold air has better oxygen density to create a better combustion and that will create better mpg. the only thing the SRI does is give a better flow into the engine to help create more power. Yes it improves mpg but not as much as if you were to have a cold air intake. The cold air intake is MUCH longer traveling to the bottom of the car to suck the cooler in compared to the sri that pulls in air thats warmer from the engine.

My boyfriend has one installed on his car, and he noticed about 5-7mpg fuel improvement on his scan gauge.

his mazda3 is supposed to get 30mpg, but with his mazdaspeed cold air intake and catback exhaust system, he gets 40mpg per tank with 75% city driving but on 100% hwy he can see 43mpg.

i hate flamewars but this is misinformation. All variables being equal,
cold air intakes DO NOT increase gas mileage, only increases available power. Colder air means more oxygen, which means more fuel to combust said oxygen. This is how closed loop cars work.

The increase in gas mileage comes from removing restrictions in the airflow (i.e. smooth pipe) smoothing out turbulances in the airflow, making it easier for the engine to breath, combine that with a tuned length, and you can increase the engines VE by utilizing harmonics to assist in forcing more air in the engine. Futher combine that with a tuned exhaust, and the same harmonics can be used for a scavaging effect from the exhaust pulling in even more air into the combustion chamber.

Warm air intakes however, can achieve all of the above benefits and can increase mileage because 4 stroke combustion engines become more efficient as intake temperature increases up to a certain temperature. You have less oxygen, which means less power, however, you have a more complete burn which increase efficiency.

If you read on ecomodders forum, a popular mod over there to get better gas mileage is to run a tube from the back of the exhaust manifold to the air intake box, for this very reason.
