First post :)

I am in the market for a new 09 sonata and while doing my d.d. i noticed that aside from the price difference between canada and the us (i live in ontario, canada), i noticed that the trim levels are actually quite different.

specifically, US Sonata GLS model appears to come with the electronic stability control, traction control... in the 4cylynder model while in canada the only way to get this option is on the v6.

Does anyone know why this is the case. I noticed there were other though smaller differences as well but this is the one that is truly irking me in regards to safety features.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

bying the car in the US is not really an option.

thanks for the response but in canada the price for a base v6 is over 27k before any other costs or taxes are added and frankly i just can't justify that price when i see the gls in the us with esc and tc for under 20k

has hyundai ever explained this, my searches have not yeilded any information about this seemingly large difference between the trims.

I asked this when I first heard about it, and couldn't understand it.

My North of the Border friends did not chime in, so I guess it is generally

accepted to get reamed. Why is the Canadian version exported from

Alabama to Canada specially made w/o all safety equipment. It seems

like it would cost more to make a Sonata with less :whistling: :w00t:

Canadians have to quit worrying about the price differences on ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. Car prices, cell phone plans, etc, etc etc. The $$$ difference just doesn't make sense. We just get Blown, Royally. Period. (They use to blame it on the low Canuck buck, but have had to make new improved excuses as of late.)

Canada should go on strike, just like on South Park!!!!

not to go too way off topic about this, but i really don't think i would have had such a reaction to the pricing and ability to choose options (i built two sonatas one on the us site and one on the canadian site and oh boy)..., had it not been for the esc and tc.

i have sent an email off to the dealer i'm dealing with to try and get an answer as i only discovered this tonight.

At the end of the day though when i factor in safety features that are standard on the supposedly same model though named differently, gls vs gl it sends me to talking to myself in the corner of the room. I've already accepted that i'm paying a higher price in canada, why can't i just get the same darn car with the same darn safety features.

good night.

LOL, par for exchange with the Sonata's resale... I'll take it!
I've got almost enough in my piggy bank ;)

We get screwed in Canada, that's all there is to it.
They don't give us the same safety equipment because they know we are better drivers :D

Must be a BIG piggy bank. We all know what that is worth. :whistling:

I'm just tryin' to help our Canadian brethern out. Warranty is from here to the border, Canadian that is.

US buyers.....$1.00 + .50. Quite the bargain...trade value that is. NADA Northwest edition.

Hades I'll throw in a full tank of gas. Petrol for those north of the border who have intercourse more than those of us south of it.

Tommer :rant2: you don't count. :bwekk:

Tommer is just glad to be back on the Internet after a stupid forest fire toasted our line out of town! Had to find something else to do for two days, instead of reading Mr. Brook's complaints, so I waxed Sharona. She still looks grand. :rant2:
Nice to be back!

Sigh - parity with US dollar and blah, blah, blah - we are a bigger country and have no people - we pay higher taxes that's the way it goes .. not to mention the markets are different, we ARE different countries after all. 1 to 1 argument doesn't hold any merit - our wages tend to be higher for 1 example ...

Regarding the lack of availability of ESC and all the toys on the 4 cylinder model - that is simply market demand. We Canadians tend to either cheap out on a vehicle or go full stink. i.e. with a Sonata for example we either buy the base model or the top of the line. Why something like ESC is considered a luxury, (that is another beef for another topic), is beyond me but that is part of the reason why the models tend to be different.

Nah, Hyundai spent too much money upgrading the operator's manual and literature/documentation to meet our bilingual restrictions...

Having driven different vehicles with ESC and without, I much prefer not to have ESC for the winters I deal with. Of course these were two different brands of vehicle, but ESC is essentially the same concepts and components. ESC in a Sonata will occasionally save you from your own stupidty, but not much else.

I tend to agree - ABS - ESC are not going to save an idiot driver. :wink2:

I had abs on a previous car and hated it. On the other hand the traction control was really effective but they need each other. I have had friends who spend big dollars to constantly fix their ABS systems and had experience with quicker than average brake wear.

My 08 Sonata GL has none of the e' stuff on the road bearing parts of the car. Less complicated - less trouble down the line. I keep my cars 10+ years on average.

Yea, there were Sunshine girls at the library, but I couldn't just sit there and stare, so I had to be a peeping Tommer.
