I mean, he's my uncle.

About a month ago, he finally got to doing the 30,000 mile maintenance @ 41,000 miles. While he was doing the maintenance, I asked him about the brakes, he checked and said that they looked brand new. I was not impressed, they're 2 years old and I have to do some pretty fierce braking on the interstate and how the people drive in Schaumburg -tsk tsk-. So I asked him why they were squealing. He replied,"It's the brand, they do that."

Today, my brother pulled my car back in the garage and told me that I needed new brakes. Finally, someone who believes me! I told him what our dear uncle had said and he checked both front and back brakes and said that the back brakes are just about completely shot.

I figured as much.

So, do I trust my uncle? I mean, I do get a pretty sweet discount and free oil changes.

-Dawn

He ll no! Your car is a big investment, to big to trust someone that just blows you off
when you ask a question. Especially when it is clear he did not even check the brakes.
Always have a mechanic you 100% trust work on your car.

Well, after driving a car for two years, the brakes definitely aren't "new". So his credibility already takes a hit right there.

metal on metal under great pressure and high speed motion causes squealing....so PLEASE get your brakes replaced. new pads shouldnt cost you a fortune.

no need to tell uncle, im sure he can change the oil okay ;)

Find another mechanic. If you get lucky enough to find a good one, stick with them. Developing a good relationship with a good mechanic, will keep you and the car happy for a long time to come.

Thanks for all your opinions. He'll just have to be my oil change man, until I can start doing it.

I'll be looking for my brakes on Friday, since I have no time at all during the other days.
