Hi folks,

I wonder if any of you can advise? I have a late 2006 Santa Fe (2007 model). It's a great car but I have one niggle that Hyundai seem loathe to help me with. Cruise Control cuts out on its own in particular circumstances. It's been in to the service centre six times and I'm now told that Hyundai UK say "that's the way it should be." Is it me, or am I correct? Hyundai have quoted page 104 to me (see below), but surely that's only if the speed DECREASES more than 9mph BELOW the set speed. I'm not going below the set speed, I'm exceeding it. I'll set the scene...

If I am following a vehicle with cruise control on, at, say, a steady 60 mph, and I want to overtake a vehicle, I depress the accelerator to gain speed, overtake the vehicle, and then pull in and release the accelerator pedal. The instructions and every other car I’ve ever driven with cruise control follows this pattern, the speed should drop back down to 60mph and then continue at that speed. The fault on my vehicle is that when I get to around 5-7mph over the ’set’ speed, the SET light extinguishes on the dashboard, cruise control function ceases, and the speed drops back to zero, if left. This is patently wrong.
The Santa Fe manual states:
P103: To increase speed, temporarily depress the accelerator pedal enough for the vehicle to exceed the preset speed. When you remove your foot from the accelerator pedal, the vehicle will return to the speed you have set.

P104: NOTE: If the vehicle speed decreases more than 9 mph (15 km/h) below the set speed or decreases below 25 mph (40 km/h), the cruise control system will automatically cancel the set speed.

Even Wikipedia agrees with my understanding:
Quote from Wikipedia: Cruise Control
...The car will maintain that speed by pulling the throttle cable with a solenoid or a vacuum driven servomechanism. Most systems can be turned off both explicitly and automatically, when the driver hits the brake or clutch. Cruise control often includes a memory feature to resume the set speed after braking and a coast feature to reset the speed lower without braking. When the cruise control is in effect, the throttle can still be used to accelerate the car, but once it is released the car will then slow down until it reaches the previously set speed.
Source Wikipedia - Cruise Control

Has anyone experienced anything similar or have any ideas/suggestions, please? Sorry for the length of the post?

As no one has responded yet, perhaps no one else has this problem? I'd love to have your views so that I can go back to Hyundai and explain that it's just my car.

Could forum members please confirm if this does or doesn't happen to your Santa Fe (or other Hyundai with cruise control)? I'm certain it shouldn't work the way I've described above.

I'd be really grateful if you would be able to confirm that if your car is set at a particular speed, and you accelerate to ANY higher speed and then remove your foot from the accelerator/gas pedal cruise control does the speed fall back to that previously set, or do you too get the "SET" light switching off, and therefore the speed would drop back to zero, if left? Many thanks in anticipation of your help.

Neil

I have a 2004 that, for a while had a problem similar to the one you describe although it was slightly different. Once resuming my set speed in the manner you described, it would not accelerate using the button on the wheel. The button would not respond at all.

Eventually the problem fixed itself. Hope this helps you in some way and best of luck in your search for a solution.

As far as I know, my 2008 works exactly like you expect it to work. And so has every other vehicle I've owned.

To make sure, I'll verify it the next time I'm out.

Mine works exactly as you describe also, that is how it should work I wouldn't let up on them until they get it fixed.

Mine works exactly how you described your "expected" function of the cruise control. I've never had it shut off while passing someone, regardless of how much faster I go.

Mine's a US model, obviously, but I wouldn't expect the cruise control to function any differently from yours...

At last, you are all telling me exactly what I wanted to hear. Very many thanks. The more positive responses I can get, the better ammunition I have to go back to Hyundai UK with. I'm really grateful to everyone who has replied, and may yet.

Well, I tried it. 3 times. Accelerated 10 KM over set cruise speed. Cruise did not shut off. Accelerated 20 KM over set speed. Same result. Cruise returned to set speed. But then I floored the pedal. Tranny downshifted and sped up by 40 KM. Hello. Cruise turned off. Not sure exactly at which time. Probably a fluke. Maybe it sensed my panic and fear of wasting fuel and getting a speeding ticket. :w00t:

Thanks "Trucker."

Note to all would be testers, PLEASE don't put yourself, or anyone else at risk if trying this out for me. I wouldn't want anyone to get a ticket either. ;-) Mine cuts out at 5-8 mph, (8-12 kph) over any speed I 'set'. More thanks to all.

I was on my way back from the mountain yesterday and on the freeway, had the cruise set at 65. Not cancelling it, I accelerated to 75 and released the pedal. It returned to 65. Since my SF is older, it doesn't have a 'SET' light; just a CRUISE light. But it resumed appropriately with no extra effort on my behalf.

Hi Neil,

As far as I know I'm the only UK forum member to respond and interestingly my cruise functions exactly as you describe. Maybe it is a safety feature of Korean built models???

To be honest I rarely use the cruise as I find I am adjusting it every 10 seconds or so due to the traffic here in the UK and also the fact that nobody else uses it so their speed fluctuates even if there is no traffic problems!

Sorry this hasn't been much help, but at least you know you're not the only one who's SF has this 'feature'.

Cheers,
Sean.

I use the cruise in my all the time. Lock it at 60 and accelerate to pass, it will drop back to 60. Never had it turn off. Only two items will turn it off. Hitting the brake or the steering wheel switch.
Could be a bad vacuum line. These have not changed much since the 80s.
That line could be bad or you have a very sensitive break light switch. If it only takes a tiny tap to turn on the brake lights, that sends a signal to the cruise and turns it off. There is an adjustment for the brake light switch, not much, but some.
