I was surprised to discover that the fuel door on the Genesis is plastic. Not sure how that will hold up over time. Do Azeras have plastic fuel doors?

Yes, it is true. I honestly wouldn't worry about it though. It seems fairly robust. The hinge and door are one piece molded plastic.

The Genesis is a curious beast... plastic fuel door, plastic 2-stage intake manifold...

Curiouser and curiouser :)

There are more Hyundai models that have plastic fuel doors than those that don't. They hold up just as well as metal fuel doors. Same with the plastic intake manifolds.

All in the name of weight savings.

Probably have to be super-sensitive to torque specifications when you're putting a plastic intake manifold back on the head, though, huh?

The intake manifold is actually two pieces, an upper and lower. The upper is plastic, the lower is aluminum.

But yes, torquing has to be done carefully. However, it's sturdier than you'd think. It's not the same type of plastic the fuel door is made out of.

Maybe they did it for weight savings, but for sure cost was the main driver. If weight was the main issue they could have installed fewer speakers. I doubt anyone would have noticed if there were 12 instead of 17 (or however many).

BTW, interior door release handle is plastic also...........

Still plan to buy one though..........

The tech package is the one that has 17 speakers. The base model audio system has fewer.

Yeah I buy weight savings and possibly even the aerodynamics of the airflow inside the manifold for plastic there - that's a quick savings of maybe 10 pounds over an aluminum intake. Not the fuel door though. I'm sure the difference is on the order of a quarter-pound. Still, it's neither here nor there, just a curiosity as far as I'm concerned.

FWIW, the base Lexicon system that comes standard on the V8 and as part of the Premium Package on the V6 has 14 speakers. The base audio system has 7 speakers.

As far as the interior door handles, yes they are chromed plastic, but they look and feel nice IMO. Similar handles are used by Lexus (including my 2006 GS430), only I like the one's in the Genesis better. :P

Okay, I stand corrected. There is a Campaign (recall) out for what Hyundai calls the "base" audio system amplifier. The one Genesis we have received is listed in the recall, and has the Lexicon 14 speaker system. I wasn't aware there was a lower level audio system, and just assumed that since it was listed in the recall, it had the "base" audio system based on Hyundai's wording.

Oh man, the recall effects me? Darn it. I'll have to do some research, what's the problem with the audio system?

Nevermind, I found you other post: http://www.hyundai-forums.com/t28180-genes...er-problems.htm

Provided I don't have any problems, I will probably just wait until my first service to have it checked out.
