I have a 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe and the headlights at this point in time are covered in a sort of "fog" looking substance.

Any help on how to get this unknown substance off would be greatly appreciated.

Hiya mate ,you can buy plastic headlight restoration kit, there are loads on ebay.or you can try a metal polish(strange i know)it's called autosol over here in the U.K. I had the same problem with my 2001 santy, and I used the autosol first(the cheapest way) i'ts time consuming but they came up a treat. good luck. :57:

Thanks for the reply and I will try to look for some of autosol or an american version of it.

I have a question about it though, did you have to take the headlight off and get to the inside of the headlight because all of the junk is on the outside.

I did'nt take the lights out, left them on, to much trouble to take them off.The actual lens (so I'vebeen told) reacts to sun light, traffic film and so on, and starts to dull down, goes cloudy and don't forget it is only plastic. It get like a film on top of the lens.So all you are doing is polishing the grime off to make the lens clear again. Good luck.

Mitch is correct. The headlights come with a thin UV protective coating but eventually that succumbs to the elements and begins to peel. Once the plastic is bare, it's only a matter of time before the rays begin to damage the plastic. I have religiously waxed mine since day one to keep this from happening but lo and behold, my passenger side light has begun to peel at the top. The hazing has not started yet but it's bound to happen eventually.

Good luck. :right:
