So I made another appointment with the dealer to have something done about the airbag light staying on when my wife is seated in the passenger seat.

This time I took a copy of the recall I printed off this website.

Dealer had not heard of the recall and was not interested in the copy I brought. He went strictly by his computer which showed NO recalls for my 2007 Sonata. He told me they wouldn't do anything without a recall letter addressed specifically to me or unless it was on the computer.

I left and called the Hyundai customer service number on the recall. They verified what the dealer told me and said I might be getting a recall letter by the end of August and if I did get one then I could have it fixed. They did verify the recall was for ALL 06,07,08 Sonatas but for some reason kept saying I MIGHT get one for my car????

So I guess I wait for the letter and just have to put up with no airbag protection for the passenger. What a crock of BS!

NTSB? Maybe a threat should be involved. Did you buy your Sonata from "this" dealer?

Thought......park it in front of the dealer with a sign, a big sign, front and back saying "PASSENGER AIRBAGS DON'T WORK can I take your WIFE for a ride?"

No, that might not work. You'll probably be giving rides all day long. :w00t:

LOL Craig...

I don't know why, but Hyundai has chosen NOT to have this "recall" appear under any of the VIN numbers for the affected Sonatas. So if your dealer searches by your VIN number for open Campaigns (or recalls), the 083 Airbag/OCS Campaign does not show up. It's that way with ALL the Sonatas.

HOWEVER... there is NO excuse for a dealership service dept. not to know about this. Hyundai sent several electronic bulletins as well as snail mail letters to the service dept. to prep us for the Campaign. To claim they "don't know about it" is inexcusable.

This exact thing happens with my wife's 06 Sonata. 90% of the time someone is seated next to her the 'passenger airbag off' light is lit.
I hope my dealer will look into it, as it is a giant safety issue. But if I meet the resistance that the OP met, what can we do?

Oh I got the Letter. Very informative. They are not going to 'fix' anything!

I purchased my 2008 Sonata Ltd 12 months ago and had the same problem. My dealer was very kind in working with me. The common factor in this passenger seat airbag light staying on was that it only seemed to be on the leather seat models. There is a sensor that engages the light to go off when a certain amount of weight is on the seat. With mine, the light started working properly (i.e, going off when someone sat in front passenger seat) after a couple of weeks of wearing in. My dealer thinks it is just that the leather needs to be broken in for the sensor to work properly. Haven't had a problem with it since. Hope this helps.

Not really. :whistling: My sensor has no problem sensing someone's Butt

through the Leather. Why would the Dealer think this when it is

a documented problem?

My dealer looked up the VIN on my '08 Limited with leather and said there are no recalls for my seats. Interestingly, my car does not exibit the problem...even with a light teenager in the seat.

This issue has nothing to do with leather vs. fabric seats. But since the issue has been known to Hyundai since early in 2006, it might have been fixed on the assembly line on later models, like the 2008 model.

I'm still waiting for Hyundai's letter.....

You'd think with a litigation opportunity like this hanging over Hyundai's head, they'd recall everyone's Sonata immediately, but no! NO! NO! :bwekk:

just got mine in the mail yesterday - surprisingly Hyundai Canada has taken notice of this one too - for some reasons we don't get half the recall notices you American lads get for some reason ...

Got mine last week. I was surprised (way to step-up Hyundai Canada). Made an appointment for Monday. The guy said the assessment could take upto 1 hour and if needed, the repari/replacement process could take upto 5 days. If so, they will provide a loaner.

They better give me another Sonata, or bigger (Azera???) cuz I drive to work everyday with a full car (four adults).

hi,

i have a sonata 2001 - i purchased the same 3 weeks ago. the airbag light suddenly seems to have come on. now the issue is since its not in warrenty - even diagnostic is a big cost. am not sure why this car is giving me this problem. i wish hyundai had a lifetime warrenty on such things. why would they want the buyer to spend 1500 USD on a car he bought for 4000 USD.

i think this is unfair - cause evem if i spend that much amount am not sure if this will recur or no... (after research i have found that the cars previous owner also spent an equivalent amount on an airbag issue)

if there are any hyundai folks listning - please help and advise

They would most likely advise you to buy a new Sonata. A 2001

one is very old and virtually worthless. Much like my 06 LX. :w00t:

But rest assured any recalls issued by the Government or by the Company

are always provided free of charge.

Update: Took her in for the recall. Two other Sonata's came in at the same time for the recall too. The assessment took 20 minutes. They said I had to get it repaired/replaced and that it would take 3-4 days. They called Enterprise to pick me up and said they would rent me a car. I now have a 2008 Magentis/Optima to test drive for the next few days. I'll update again when I get my baby back.

Update #2: Got a call from my service rep today at 4:15pm saying that he hopes my car will be ready today, but he'll call me later to confirm. He called me back at 5:00pm to tell me my baby is ready to be picked up. The shop closes at 6:00pm, so i race down to Enterprise to return the Magentis, then they drop me off at the dealership to pick up my baby.

All in all, i was without my baby from 8am Monday to 6pm Tuesday. Not sure exactly what they did, but I'm happy that I didn't have to pay one red cent for it.
