Hi guys,

I just got my new I30. Everything is nice, great so far. Top notch :)

I just didn't know one thing - I was surprised that the trip computer is not able to show Immediate Fuel Consumption. This is what I really wanted :(

Q1:
Anyone has an idea if it would be possible to "TURN ON" somehow? Can guys at Hyundai service turn it on? Using some of Software Configuration Tools or so?
Please let us know your ideas and experience.

Q2:
Also one more thing - I am checking the average consumption a bit - it is currently about 7.8l (only driven 270km so far) in town conditions. Wanted to ask... Is it accurate? How can I go lower? I read that 6.5 or 7 is possible to achive too. You have any ideas how to achieve that? Drive on low revolutions (rpm) ?

Thanks,

Hi Markusus!

Welcome to the forum!

About the trip computer: It only gives the average FC. There is no way to switch to immediate FC. I asked my dealer. I drove a Hyundai Tucson before and it had the same.
My average FC (after 3000 km) is 7,7 l to 100 km. I have a 1.6 engine. (petrol)

Greetings,
Tony

Hi Markusus,

Welcome to site.

Both you questions have been discussed in great depth on an i30 web site which spun off from this site.
www.i30ownersclub.com

I see you are not a member of it, unless you registered under a different name.

It's dedicated solely to i30's.

Join it and you'll be amazed at the topics relating to the i30, petrol and diesel models.
Site set up by a chap from OZ but has members from all over the globe.

Anyway to answer your question. Yes only does average since last reset. If going on a trip - you need to reset at start.

Thanks guys for your answers,

So far it looks like you say there is no way to "allow" immediate FC showing on Trip computer - thats sad :( but I'll try to investigate a bit more :)

And yes - I know about i30ownersclub forum - already checking the topics there.

any other tips please..?

Hi
You could always buy a scan guage 2 see details here http://www.scangauge.com/products/ and it will do more than just give you instant fuel readouts.

Cheers

Shambles, Itza (and others),

Looks great. I've been looking on eBay and have found 2 Oz sellers. There may be others. I am very tempted. One issue is the location of the port (under the bonnet). I shall look under the dash and see if there is a second port. Even if there is no port inside the i30 cabin, it shouldn't be difficult to push a cable through the firewall by putting a hole in a grommet somewhere.

Very interesting! :57:

But I still dont see that "gauge" Trip Computer can show immediate FC...

And the thing is - could possibly someone explain how can it be connected and built in the I30? Is it easy or hard? Can we do it by ourselves or expert work is necessary?

thanks,

Markusus,

Fitting it would not be a problem. There is a socket under the bonnet (known as an OBDII socket) that is standard on all new vehicles. Some vehicles have them under the dash, but I haven't seen one under the dash on an i30. The unit comes with a 1.8m cable which could be fed through a wiring grommet in the firewall.

Service departments use a device plugged into the OBDII socket to check a range of things about the vehicle, including egine error data. The ScanGuage II can read this error data and clear error data as well. The OBDII gives all sorts of info about the vehicle and the engine including fuel usage, speed of the vehicle, distance travelled, etc, direct from the vehicles computer system. There is where the i30 trip computer gets its info. From what I have read, the ScanGuage gives fuel consumption figures with a 2 second delay, which is near enough to immediate.

As to how much info the i30 OBDII socket gives about the vehicle I do not know, but since it is a new vehicle, I would assume it would be quite extensive.

OBDII socket update.

Someone on www.i30ownersclub.com has just informed me that there is an OBDII socket under the dash of the i30 just above the right knee of the driver. I have looked in ouri30 and have can confirm this.

Would make fitting the device a breeze.

Hi,

Thanks for explanations - and that sounds awesome.
Every 2 seconds?! That sounds really good.

So if I get the ScanGauge2 and plug it in the OBDII socket under the dash of I30 - and I'll place it somewhere on the dash (or so...) until I have it impemented-built into the car's dash (recommendations about how to do it and if it is allowed are very welcome) ... will it cancel the warranty?
Do I need official Hyundai service to take care of it?

Does ScanGauge2 come with the cable that can be directly connected to the OBDII of i30? No problem?

Is there any alternative to ScanGauge2?
Or is it the only thing on the market? Is it the best choice?

Markusus,

You have a lot of questions about a product I have not seen or used. If you want, you can download a copy of the manual from the ScanGuage website on the Support page.

http://www.scangauge.com/support/pdfs/SGMan5_0.pdf

All my comments are based on the information I have read or downloaded from the website.

I can say that it comes with the cable.

I've decided to order a Scan Guage II. I should have it sometime next week. I will be interested to see how many of the featureswill be available from the i30 ECU. I'm looking mainly for the fuel immediate feedback of consumption, but a number of other feedouts will be interesting.

I'll post my impressions when I have had a chance to play with it for a while.

Bob

Hi Bob and all others...

Sounds great that you decided to order SG2. Do you have it already? How does it work? How did you plugged it in OBD2? I looked under the dash of the driver (almost broke my neck:)) and there are some interesting things.. which one (of the interfaces) is OBD2? Can someone post a picture of that?

Bob if you can make some pictures of your SG2 and provide some feedback and what did you have to overcome to make it all work and look well - that would be fantastic..

thanks - nice day to you all...

Have had the ScanGuage II in the i30 since Monday. I am very impressed with it. Haven't yet calibrated the fuel economy. That will have to wait until the next time I fill up the i30 in about a week.

I have the following guages showing on the display:
LHK (Litres per Hundred Km - Real time)
MAP (Manifold Air Pressure - psi)
KPH (This figure corresponds with the GPS readout)
ºcIA (Intake Air Temperature - ºC)

I have positioned it on top of the steering column in front of the intrument cluster with velcro. The cable is hidden and is tucked away under the dash above the plastic. Looks very neat.

I have yet to fiddle with the advanced features such as Xgauge and add-a-guage.

See images in a later posting for a better isea of the postioning and appearance of the guage in ouri30.

Bob

Looks great!

For how much did you buy it? And from where?
I'll probably go to some local auto-shops here and check it they have it...

Does it also show all other information (except the 4 paramaters that you mentioned) like speed, rpm or other types of fuel consumption reporting (like immediate FC, or average FC for last 10kms or so...)?

As you mention - I'd like to be sure... can it really be mounted fimrly, precisely and looking good - or did you have to use some tricks to do it?

Can you please post some more high quality pics of it?

thanks,

Markusus,

I mounted it with a couple of velcro tabs. I is quite secure.

I shall try to put up a better photo soon.

Yes, it can show fuel consumption average as well as immediate fuel consumption. Fuel figures are available for, the current tank, the current trip, today and yesterday. This requires a few button presses to access.

If you a a bit of a technical wizard, you can get some of these figures to display on the four available guages. These can be changed to suit your needs and swapped back and forward.

Look at the website for more info http://www.scangauge.com

I bought mine from an Australian eBay seller, but it could be available in your country.

Images of the ScanGuage II

These images show the location I decided used to fit the guage to ouri30. Guage is secured with two velcro tabs.

This image shows the guage without flash to give you an idea of the display colour I use at night.

Image taken with flash. Note the engine is not running. The LHK shows 9999 when engine is not running.
