from posts and articles online they've said the '03 have been known for clutch problems. If it has 50k and you are second owner some of the warranty should be transferred to you (but i dunno how much). I have a 2.0 5spd myself and it's a pretty fun ride if you don't need too much power. I get roughly 28-30 miles to the gallon doing mostly highway driving. It's only been a year since I've got mine but I had no problems with it other than one time into the dealer for alignment. In contrast my sister's '07 civic as had its batteries die twice. In terms of driving expect a long third gear and some minor body roll during sharp turns. But all in all, it's a great choice.

Hey jlien222, I had a 2001 SE for quite some time. I recently picked up a 2003 SE with a 5 speed. They are an awesome fun car to drive. Next to no roll and very stable. Close to 140hp, dam good mileage. This "clutch" problem has been ruled out by many garages and different hyundai dealerships. I also looked into it, before I bought my 2003. I will tell you that between the 2001 and the 2003. the set up of the clutch is completely different. In the 2003, the clutch doesn't engage until the last +- 1 inch on the pedal. So it is quite tricky. Bottom line, its not the clutch. I have heard many people complain. Its like anything else, how do you drive?? If you drive like an idiot and slip the clutch, guess what?? $$$ It comes down to how you drive..

Perfect! I'm glad you got the car. Yeah the 2.0 gets excellent mileage. I filled mine up yesterday to confirm my post: I filled up 13.338 gallons with a 395.7miles shown on the trip meter. That's almost 29.7 miles to the gallon with no grandma-style driving, and air condition was on all the time.

Question: Does the 2003 come with CVVT?

I've heard and read some posts about "taking away" CVVT? Why would that be? I thought it was supposed to improve engine performance.

CVVT stands for continuous variable valve timing. Many car producers uses it to perform torgue and mileage. That one I really don't believe. My 2001 I am pretty sure has more jam in the 2.0L. I definatley had better gas mileage. You have 2 timing belts on the passenger side enclosed in a plastic cover. I don't know if you can "take it away" though.

dont buy an 03 i have one myself...and ive had unknown amount of problems and hyundai doesnt like to deal with them. especially the clutch. ive replaced mine twice. my radiators cracked. my rear axle bearing went bad. my airconditioner crapped out. i have something wrong with the engine. i dont know what it is it wont let me go over 3000 rpms. ive spent about 8 grand on the car. and i bought it for 15000. just dont bother with the 03. go 04 or higher. my brother has the 04 and hes never had any problems with it.
