Well, Hyundai messed-up. During their transition to the 09 model which is not available they sold out of 08 Hyundai SE's. Huge sales going on the lower end model but I definately don't want the lower version of this nice car. Well, I'm stuck since we need to get a high mileage car soon and since can't get a nice SE I may have to turn to a Honda Civic. Hate to due but since it could be 2-3 more months until 09 comes out and no guarantee of good pricing as compared to Honda or Toyota my hand may be forced.

Not too good of planning on Hyundai part since everyone is racing to buy these things and even more since Consumer Reports labled it a better buy then the Toyota Corolla. Go figure!

Silly if you ask me.

Get the GLS, the SE has traction control and esc and also has a leather wrapped wheel and shifter with 16 inch wheels. that is the only difference.

You live in LA. you do not need traction control and esc, and the other things are cosmetic, and going by what you said, you want this car for the gas mileage, so cosmetics should not matter, except in LA. :whistling: but then you can put all the cosmetics on a Elantra you want and its still an Elantra.

Hardly enough to switch to A WHOLE NOTHER CAR/COMPANY. LMAO.

You may be right but the bigger 16 inch wheels provide better stopping in emergency (see Consumer Reports review on SE)

My wife who this car is for wants the leather for comfort and a sunroof. She is driving 70 miles a day so this is her choice. I also think the bigger tires make the car look better and doesn't decrease the mileage that much.

Well, still bad planning for Hyundai to be 2-3 months without this car in their lineup. Will loose a lot of sales.

A wider tire may stop a little faster due to friction, but on a bigger, heavier rim, and the fact the tire is a tad heavier, it is a moot point, no real difference.

By that logic, the stupid 24 inch wheels on suvs these days must stop on a dime!!!

the GLS has the sunroof option, mine has it.

I don't believe Honda or Toyota offers all of the options on the SE, so what model will you be getting all these options and the same warranty on?

Don't get me wrong. I love Hyundai. I am a current owner of an 06 Sonata LX and have had an 04 and an 05 Santa Fe in the family. My problem is my wife is spending $500 a month or more on gas for her truck and we need a high MPG car fast. I like the Elantra over the Honda and Toyota lineup its just no guarantee when the 09 will hit the lot. My calculations for any of these over 30MPG cars we would save almost $250 a month in gas. If 1 month wait no problem but if it becomes 4 month wait; problem.

I like what I'm seeing in pictures of the 09 version and it looks much more sportier then either Honda or Toyo can offer.

My 2 cents

I guess I don't see the logic.

You need a "high mpg car" fast, and could have a gls with all the options except a few trivial ones, and tc and esc which you do not need in so cal, but you wont go with a gls?

Leather in a economy car is silly anyway, IMHO.

but I digress, it is your choice. good luck with it.

Who told you they sold out of SE's? The dealership I work for is continuously getting SE's in and they are usually sold or sell right away. I don't know how Elantra's are selling on that side of the US but they are selling great here and we can't keep them in stock. If I were you, find out what your dealer has coming in and put a deposit on it.

The one Elantra we haven't been able to get is the SE with leather package.

I can see his logic. I'm the same way, if I were to buy an Elantra I would only settle for an SE and nothing less. I wouldn't go for a Civic or Corolla, check out Toyota nation as the new Corolla's are having some minor problems.
