Welcome to the world of compact engine design! Yes, you must remove the upper intake plenum to get the rear bank of spark plugs off. Unfortunately, this is becoming common with Japanese and Korean engines. You can reuse the metal gasket between upper and lower intake plenum. Use care when torquing the bolts from upper to lower, as the threads are aluminum and strip easily. Also, the three 10mm bolts that hold the upper plenum to the support bracket are very difficult to get re-installed as you have to work blind...you cannot get your head back there to see. Also, only loosen the upper locking nut on the cruise control and accelerator linkage but leave the lower locking nut untouched so you don't have to adjust the slack during reinstallation.
And I really hated the 2.3 liter engine in the Ford Ranger pickup made by Mazda but you did not have to remove the intake for that engine, only the skin on your knuckles.
