I have a 2001 sante fe the timing belt broke, got some bent valves. I took the head got all the valves and every to do with the valves replaced. I went to install the cams but with the rocker arms istalled the cam will not sit flush. If i put the bearing caps on and torqe them down it will mash the cam down where the valves will be open. I got all of the intake and 2 of the ex. replaced and all of the stems. The head assembly seems to be correct. IF i dont put the rocker arms on the cam spins freely any help would be great.

l have read you post three times and l am still not sure where your at. the cam will NOT sit flush with the rocker arms installed. if you tighten down the cam bearings there will be resistance because you are forcing some the vavles open as you are tightening this is normal. when the cam. is tightend down some of the valves will be open, just make sure you can turn the camshaft once it's tightend down (there will be some resistance)

All of the valves are open there are spose to be closed untill u turn the cam to where the lobe on the cam will mash the valve spring and open the valve. All of the valves are open at the same time. If i take the cam off the valves are shut.

Yes... but I don't think you understand. All of the valves WILL be shut until you install the cam. The springs hold them shut. With the cams properly installed, there will be some valves open and some closed. The valves are not all closed or open at the same time.

Dear vdoe , et al.,

Please remember that this is a 4 cylinder, 4 stroke engine Double Overhead Cam engine with 16 valves....8 intake, 8 exhaust.

With the camshafts PROPERLY installed and torqued down, you will always have

1) one cylinder on the intake stroke ( intake valves open)
2) one cylinder on the exhaust stroke (exhaust valves open)
3) one cylinder on compression stroke ( intake and exhaust valves closed)
4) one cylinder on power stroke (intake and exhaust valves closed)

or you could be partly between strokes and have intake valves opening and exhaust valves closing. Also remember that the Hyundai OEM 2.4 liter valve duration is I think 256 degrees. So you will have some overlap of intake valves opening while exhaust valves are closing at TDC of the intake stroke.

Byron
