I'm trying to make sure my insurance company is giving me proper credit for the type alarm the 2008 Elantra has. Here are the definitions they gave me.
When it comes to anti-theft we only have 3 options available. There is alarm only, passive disabling device & active disabling device.

From Safeco’s site:

Active Disabling Device - the vehicle is equipped with a disabling device which prevents the car's engine from being started. The device is activated manually by the owner/driver when leaving the car.

Passive Disabling Device- the vehicle is equipped with a disabling device which prevents the car's engine from being started. The device turns itself on when the owner/driver shuts down the engine or leaves the car

Alarm Only- the vehicle is equipped with an audible alarm or siren that can be heard at a distance of at least 300 feet for at least 3 minutes. The alarm is activated when the door, hood or trunk is opened by an intruder.

Safeco deemed this type of anti-theft to be Alarm only. The other two types are typically going to be found on the more expensive vehicles

Can you tell me if they are correct in designating as "Alarm Only"?

On the Elantra, it is "Alarm Only". The Elantra does not have a starter disable feature.

If you are trying to make it go off by setting it with the remote then unlocking the door with the key and opening it... the alarm won't go off. It's made to go off in the event of unauthorized entry (break glass, reach inside and open door). Try it... sit in the car, shut the door and arm the system, then open the door. Voila! The alarm goes off. When you unlock the door with the key from the outside it turns off the security system.

EDIT: I just went back out to my car to try one more thing... Sitting in the car, lock the doors with the remote, then open the driver's door. While the alarm is going off, try to start the car with the key. Mine wouldn't start until I turned off the alarm with the transmitter by hitting unlock. Apparently it does have a starter disable feature, but it is only activated when the alarm has been tripped. If you enable the security system while inside the car then start the car with the key, it will start with no problem. Strange. I have an Accent, but don't see why it would be any different for the Elantras.
