If you are trying to make it go off by setting it with the remote then unlocking the door with the key and opening it... the alarm won't go off. It's made to go off in the event of unauthorized entry (break glass, reach inside and open door). Try it... sit in the car, shut the door and arm the system, then open the door. Voila! The alarm goes off. When you unlock the door with the key from the outside it turns off the security system.
EDIT: I just went back out to my car to try one more thing... Sitting in the car, lock the doors with the remote, then open the driver's door. While the alarm is going off, try to start the car with the key. Mine wouldn't start until I turned off the alarm with the transmitter by hitting unlock. Apparently it does have a starter disable feature, but it is only activated when the alarm has been tripped. If you enable the security system while inside the car then start the car with the key, it will start with no problem. Strange. I have an Accent, but don't see why it would be any different for the Elantras.
