Hi,
I'm trying to get the pac swi-ps to work with a new sony head unit. I installed it and couldn't get it past where you program the "version 9" into it, neither could a local installer. I'm pretty sure my aftermarket wiring harness doesn't have the right wires. It didn't have the right wire for the antenna power either. Does anyone know the correct car wire color to splice into/ has anyone successfully installed one of these? The wire listed on the pac website doesn't seem to be working. Thanks,
Dave

Dear dm,

I would love to solve a problem that both you with the instructions and the local installer with years of experience could not solve, but you have me at a disadvantage. Can you send a picture of the aftermarket wiring harness?

I have no experience with the pac swi-ps. Is this the unit you are using?

The installer really didn't know what he was doing. I had installed the head unit and hd radio myself, but couldn't get any am reception because the wire for antenna power was also missing from my wiring harness. I told him that, and asked him to use a different harness. He of course then just took my install apart and put it back together the same way, and of course the tuner still didn't work. Unfortunately, all of the wiring diagrams I've seen of the '06 sonata say the car's gray wire is the antenna power (it's not, it's really what becomes the yellow 12v in most harnesses). The guy actually tried to convince me that aftermarket tuners typically don't get reception, and that the antenna power didn't exist. I made him splice into a few different wires coming out of the dash, until all of a sudden the tuner started working when we tried the green and black wire. So basically he doesn't have a clue. The wiring harness I'm using doesn't really matter...I'm looking for which car wire to use, not which harness wire. If I know the car wire, I can either splice directly to it, or look for which pin it becomes in the car's plug. The harness has a bunch of empty spots, and a bunch of unlabeled wires of the same color. Pac says to splice their white wire to the wire at pin 18. That didn't work. Of note, installation of the swi-ps is basically the same as the swi-x and other pac steering wheel control interfaces, so if anyone has installed any of them, they will likely know the wires I'm looking for.
Thanks, I do appreciate the help.
-Dave

You are supposed to ground the car green and splice white to the car brown if I recall properly.
Or it's the other way around... take a moment to study the instructions as the comment on grounding is in a different step than the instruction for splicing white.

I just installed my PAC, but haven't got the instructions near me.

Yeah, I saw that part of the instructions about grounding. I didn't see the installer guy trying to put it in, so I'm not sure if he did that step. I may take things apart and try that myself, just to be sure (I thought I had done that step when I first tried). thanks.

Hey guys, I am having a similar problem
I have the AVIC Z2, had a problem with the reception but found the wire for the antenna (amp) was not connected. After connecting it worked great.
The main problem now is I cannot get past the "version 9" step on my pac swips.
I have grounded the pin 19 and connected pin 18 to the white wire.
Please let me know if you are able to do it and how. If you would like, perhpas we can figure it out on the phone - just PM your number.
Thanks

That's exactly where I had got to. I'm not gonna have any time to mess with it for a few days...I'll let you know if I have any success.
thanks,

dmd003 - I am going to call tech support tomorrow and see what they have to say. I have a feeling that the unit is fried. If that be the case, I sure hope that they will replace it, I got the unit off e-bay.
Anyway, will keep you posted of the outcome.

Bad news, I fear. IIRC, PAC does not support units purchased thru eBay.

OK, listen up! Automotive wires are rarely "brown" or "green." They're usually something like "green with silver tics" or "purple with a white stripe." "Tics" run the width of the wire while "stripes" run the length.

This is how I wired my Pioneer; everything works.

Wiring the PAC SWI-PS

Connect the PAC black to your adapter black (ground.)

Connect the PAC red to your adapter red (accessories.)

Connect the PAC white to the brown with silver tics wire going to the factory plug.

Connect the green with silver tics wire going to the factory plug to your adapter black (ground.)

Regardless of what the website or Tech says, do NOT use a resistor; if you do your PAC will neither program nor operate correctly.

Wiring the Antenna Amplifier

If you don't do this you won't have any reception unless you're next door to the transmitter.

Connect your radio's Antenna Remote to the "Frog Wire" (it's green with a black stripe and silver tics) going to the factory plug. If your radio doesn't have an antenna remote, connect the Frog Wire to your radio's Amplifier Remote.

The color of your radio's Antenna Remote and Amplifier Remote varies; look at your installation instructions.

Well I spent some time on the phone with PAC yesterday - they say my unit is fried. All ther resistance readings from the remote are correct, however the white whire should be pushing out 5V and mine is reading 5.13V.. They said that is probaly why I can't get passed the "version 9" mode. I asked about replacement (warranty) and they said I need to take it back to the dealer I bought it from - that would be E-bay.
So basically I am SOL - the e-bay guy wants to charge me restocking fee and will also tell me that I broke the unit.
I was so looking forward to getting this installed - especially because my remote from Korea arrived with the extra 2 buttons.

I fear I may be in the same position Kouger, scabby ebay seller and no support from PAC even though my seller was claiming to be authorized.

Mine will take the programming for version 9, but when I press and hold the steering wheel button the light goes out, then after I release the button it never comes back on.

For such an expensive product these adaptors seem to be real pieces of rubbish.

dogstar - I am not sure if this is happening with your system, but I did confirm that I was doing it correctly with PAC tech support.

After you program the version 9 into the system, the light will blink 9 times. At that point turn off the key, then turn the key on again, it will then blink 9 times, you then push the program button and release it, the light should stay on, then you will go through the process of programming each remote button. If the light does not stay on (as in my case) then most likely your system is fried (unless you have not wired it up correctly).
On PAC's website, they do state that they will not provide any warranty for items bought on e-bay except for one dealer, can't remember who that dealer was but he is the only one listed for e-bay.
They won't even repair mine at my cost, they just toss them and replace the units when a warranty item comes in.
Just recheck your wiring and if you can test your votage coming from the white wire, you should have 5V, if you do then you might be in luck and it might be something else.
Let me know what happens.

Sorry, in my description I was skipping a couple steps, but yes, you are correct.

I program for mode 9, turn off, turn on, get 9 flashes.
Hit the program button and the light comes on.
I then press and hold my steering wheel button until the light goes out.
The light never comes back on and I have to turn off, then turn on again to get my 9 flashes and try to start over again.

White wire was giving right around 5 volts, but I don't recall the exact reading.

I hope it is something simple, but I doubt it... I followed the instructions to the letter and I don't think I messed up, but I'll double check this afternoon since it is a little cooler out, only in the low 80s and not low 90s and rain like this past week. :)

Crutchfield says you have the wrong unit...what the nf needs is not the pac siw-"ps", but the pac swi-"x".

edit: if you check the "hands-on" research tab for the device on crutchfield.com, it will list known incompatible remote models.

My SWI-PS works fine on my 2006 NF Sonata with two different Pioneer head units.

BTW, I've also got a SWI-X to work on my NF Sonata.

Crutchfield's information is apparently incorrect or out of date, as PAC lists the SWI-JACK as being compatible with the 2006-2008 Hyundai Sonata.
This happens from time to time when product gets updated and Crutchfield usually catches it, but they are not nessecarily the best resource.

Here are the instructions for using a SWI-JACK with a 2006-2008 Sonata:

No worries, it seems like the 08s through 06s listed the same adapters when I checked prior to buying mine, now it appears they only list the 06s as being compatible.
