I called the nearest Hyundai dealer today, and was told a programmed remote for our 2007 Elantra was $160.00. This seems a bit pricey, and have found new remotes for the 07 Elantra on Ebay for $20.

My question is this: since the remotes have to be programmed by the dealer, is there any way I could buy a remote start/keyless entry package from Best Buy? My guess is they couldn't program a universal remote to work either, or do they have ways around this? Thanks for any advice or tips!

The factory remotes themselves are about $100 (estimated without me actually looking it up), and they are also charging you a fee to program it. That's why the price is so high.

A universal remote cannot be programmed to work with the factory system. The only downside to adding an aftermarket system to the car is if any warranty questions come up, there are going to be quick to blame problems on the installation of the aftermarket system. I'm not saying you can't do it, and it won't void your warranty per se, but if they think that any problems are caused by it, then you may have issues with getting electrical things covered under warranty.

I don't doubt you at all, in fact I'm sure they are around $100. Any idea how someone on ebay is selling what they say are new factory remotes for $20? I checked their other items for sale, and they have remotes for many makes/models. Wonder what their source is.

Well... that I don't know. We have a few spare remotes that get left lying around sometimes, like when a brand new car comes in off the transport truck, they are supposed to keep both remotes and keys with the car at all times. However, it never fails that whoever does the pre-delivery inspection will misplace a remote or two and we find them lying around... maybe it's a situation like that and it's an employee selling them... lol. I dunno how anybody could sell them so cheap, they COST us more than that.

I don't doubt that they are legitimate Hyundai transmitters. The only thing I'd be skeptical of is whether or not they go to the particular model that they say they go to. I've seen them group models together in the description that do not have the same remote part numbers... like Accents and Santa Fes and Elantras. That's the only thing I'd be afraid of. If you bought the correct part number for your car, then you could take it to your dealership and have them program it for you for just the programming fee. They should only charge you a half-hour labor to do this. If they charge you anymore, I'd go to another dealership, because it only takes about 5 minutes to do.

I think they also reclaim them from wrecked cars. I bought a remote on E-bay and also the programming instructions for a 2003 Buick Century ... all for less than $25. It worked great and saved over $100.
