Hi everyone:
I'm thinking of purchasing an '09 Sonata. Love the car and have had good luck with Hyundai in the past. My current wheels are prime for a trade-in and I might do the switch.
But here's where I need your help.
I've read and read and read about invoice pricing and holdback and deals, etc. While it appears that invoice is about 1K below sticker, that doesn't seem like my best possible deal. Here's why. A fellow messenger emailed me to say he was able to puchase a new sonata for about 7K off the sticket price. To him, I say WAY TO GO!
With that said, I've gotta believe these vehicles have plenty of "pad" in them to cut a great deal. I know the holdback is about 2% of the invoice and that the current rebate is $1500.
Should I go to the dealer, find a Sonata, and offer 7K off the sticker? Is this realistic? My plan is to trade my current car, cut the best deal and pay cash.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

:00000732: first and foremost...
you can't really use a blanket "7k off sticker" for every car. some of it depends on what car it is you are buying... (and offering $7k off sticker at the very beginning will possibly get you laughed at)
which '09 Sonata are you looking at? that will affect what you offer.. offering $7k off sticker for a V6 Limited is not the same thing as offering $7k off sticker for a GLS I4 Base model...
how many Sonatas does the dealer have sitting on the lot? (if there are only a couple, they might not give you a wonderful deal because they know they will be able to sell it for closer to sticker to someone else)
you may find it hard to work a deal and THEN tell them about the trade-in. they normally ask up front if you are doing a trade-in.. depending on what you are trading it, dont expect much from it.. (if you try to trade in an SUV at this point, they will give you next to nothing for it)..
paying cash does work in your favor though... cash buyers typically have more "wiggle room" for deals..
at the end of the day, if you dont get the deal your comfortable with, be prepared to walk away... it's your trade in, your cash... if they want the sale, they will go a bit lower to make it happen....
soooooooooooo many variables in buying a car.. it's really a pain in the a$$...
that's my 2¢

Ddix:
Thanks for the reply. As for the Sonata, I'd like to get ther GLS 4 cyl. I don't want the 6 cyl based on the gas mileage. The dealer has about 25-30 on the lot to sell.
One thing I plan on doing is playing myself off 3 dealers. I did this a year ago when I did a lease deal on a crossover SUV and it cut my monthly payment by about $40.
Can you tell me about your deal? Thanks.

The dealer has about 25-30 on the lot to sell. I have an 06 Sonata V6 and an 08 Sonata 4 cyl. I really don't see a bif difference in gas consumption, so I had to check up on the 2009 model year. When it comes to the 2009 model year, the difference in gas mileage is only 3 mpg. 4 Cyl: 22 / 32 V6: 19 / 29

Ditto on there not being much markup on a GLS 4 cylinder. I bought a 2009 Sonata GLS 2.4L about eleven days ago. The dealer made me a decent offer for my 2007 Mustang GT and priced the Sonata fairly. I knew it was a decent deal, not a great deal, so being the haggler I am, I told them I wanted them to take a bit more off the price of the Sonata. They said they didn't have much wiggle room, so I asked to see the invoice. They showed me the invoice, and the difference between invoice and sticker was only about $300. We agreed to split the difference, so I drove the car out for around $150 over invoice. They didn't make much on the Sonata, but they should make a good dollar on the Mustang when it sells.
By the way, cash buyers so NOT have an advantage. If you read up on cash sales on the various automotive web sites, you will find that dealers get a kick back on the financing, which adds to their profit. If you pay cash their profit will be reduced, and they may try to recoup the profit by not giving you as good a deal on the car.

Mor:
You are right about the cash deal. I won't mention it at all until they try to send me to the ripoff finance person. Instead, I'll just whip out the checkbook. Thanks for the post.

QUOTE(HyundaiLvr87 @ Jun 30 2008, 02:37 PM) Are you sure that $7,500 off was on an 09? I find that very hard to believe. There is only about $1,200 wiggle room on a 4cyl Sonata. No he said $7000 :P Can you get an 09 for 7 Grand below Sticker. I did in 06, but that was with the top trim unit. A lot of wiggle room with higher Rebates Hey what about that GM Stock is down to a 54 Year low. Time to sell. Time to buy! http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/30/news/compa...sion=2008063016

We have 08 SE V6 loaners with 3,200- 6,500 miles that we are practically giving away. The best time to buy a Hyundai is when no one else is in the Dealership, and or if they have not sold any Units during that day. I am still convinced that end of month numbers are much more important than the average person might think. Although I bought my 06 on Feb 11 06, I was going to Return my purchase on 03/03/06 but I wanted that silly Sonata. Things couldn't have turned out better!

MORE INFO......found out from a friend that each car has at least 3K in taxes built into the price. why should the consumer pay their dealer and manufacturers tax? So there's more wiggle room considering they can write off all of that. My friend bought his truck that had a 23K sticker for 16,5K out the door.
Anyone else care to share their sticker vs actual price stories?

All sorts of taxes that are laid onto the manufacturer and dealer that are federal and state. Seriously, they are in the cars. Of courtse, they are also a write off against the profits made off the sale.

I certainly will but I need to call him and get the actual wording of it. I was shocked when he told me, but he's got lots of friends in the business.

QUOTE(MiamiLX @ Jun 30 2008, 10:48 PM) Hey I am going away for a few days so I'll miss 'dixiepucks' update, but Craig you are in the Business. Perhaps you can shed some light upon this subject? Thank you, Mr Know It All! :P :trophy:  When I got my 07 Sonata back in Feb. 07 I saved $3,500 because of rebates then a $1,200 dealer disocunt and then I got a whopping $12 employee discount. I think my out the door price was $15,380 if i remember correctly. This post has been edited by HyundaiLvr87: Jul 1 2008, 07:32 AM
