I've never had a 12v outlet in a car before, just a cig. lighter. What kind of gadgets can you plug into it? How does it work? etc. I'm kinda new when it comes to automotive stuff.

The 12V accessory power outlet is similar to the cigarette lighter but the socket has some internal differences. For all intents and purposes they're used the same way. Plug in whatever takes 12V and has a cigarette lighter plug. Some plugs seem to work better in the cigarette lighter than the accessory power outlet or vice versa, I guess the internal construction of the socket makes a difference.

I have my Sirius receiver plugged into the accessory power outlet and keep the cigarette lighter socket for plugging in phone chargers or my GPS. Would be even better if it had a built-in AC inverter with a household-style plug from the factory like the car I had before this, then we could power pretty much anything.

virtually anything as long as you have a converter and make it into a house hold plug

It's more than a cigerate light plug. it's a 12V 120W plug, it's made for pluging in a converter so you can run your laptop, Cooler and other more high poered devices from it.

I have a 175W power inverter that I bought from a truck stop when I went to Padre Island a few yrs ago. Best thing I've ever bought. I'm going to fab up a household style plug and place it under the glovebox near the passenger's left leg. That way it's out of the way and accessible. Gonna get another cheap power inverter and take it apart and place the plug that is on the inverter in that spot...should be fairly straight forward right?
