I wanted to change the sparkplugs in my 04 Tib but it looks like its not that easy. The ones in front are easy to get to but how do I get the ones in the back out?????

Please, somebody answer this, because I've been wondering the exact same thing and haven't been able to find any guidance anywhere!

I'm getting a CAI and was thinking of spark plug wires at the same time because perhaps it would give me more clearance and elbow room, but I'm wondering how it's possible to actually have space to insert them. The wires seem really tall on that end and I don't know if it would actually fit.

Thanks!

Im talking about the V6 of course......just looked in my owners manual and it says take it to the dealer for changing the plugs in a V6......how ridiculous!

They say that because most of the time you have to take off so much stuff to get to the rear bank of plugs that it's just too much trouble and worth it to take it to the dealer.

I will say this to you... if your car is still under warranty and you start taking stuff apart to change your own plugs and screw something up, the dealer will not cover under warranty whatever it was you messed up. Many times the intake manifold has to come off to get access to the rear bank of plugs. If it sounds like something you're willing to risk, have fun. It's a PITA, even for the dealer to do.

I know thats why they say that. Its ridiculous one has to go to that much trouble just to change the sparkplugs.......very very poor design....

Sorry, but it's not a design that's unique to Hyundai. It's no different from any other front drive V6... I had a 94 Mercury Sable that was the same way. It's what you have to deal with when you put a big engine in sideways in a small engine bay.

Dear Joey and LilBean,

To change the rear bank of spark plugs, you have to remove the upper intake manifold. It looks scary, but very easy on your second time. There is an excellent how-to on the hmaservice.com website. In addition, some important notes:

a) the three 10 mm bolts that secure the back of the upper IM to the bracket are a blind reinstall...you just can't get your eyes back there to see where the holes are. These are not critical for the upper IM, they just provide additional vibration damping.
B) When you remove the accelerator and cruise control cables, leave the lower lock screw in place, only loosen the upper lock screw. When you reinstall, you just tighten back the upper lock screws.
c) the upper IM to lower IM joint uses a metal gasket...it is reusable.
d) use care when torquing the IM bolts as the lower IM holes are aluminum threads and easily stripped.
e) If you have the time, this is an excellent opportunity to clean the throttle body with a good cleaner.
f) If you are looking for a small but cheap horsepower boost during the summer, you can also do the heated water bypass on the two hoses connected under the throttle body.
